Ananias and his wife Sapphira lied about the price of land they sold, and both died, and great fear came on the church. The apostles did many signs, and people brought the sick to be healed. Acts 6: Seven Helpers and Stephen

The Greek-speaking widows were being overlooked in the daily serving of food, so the apostles asked the believers to choose seven men full of the Spirit and wisdom to serve. The apostles kept to prayer and the word, and the word of God increased. Stephen, one of the seven, did great wonders, and when opponents could not withstand his wisdom, they brought false witnesses against him before the council. All who looked at him saw his face like the face of an angel.

Acts 7: Stephen Sees Heaven

Asked about the charges, Stephen retold Israel's story, from God's promise to Abraham to Joseph in Egypt and Moses at the burning bush, and how the people often resisted the ones God sent. He said God does not dwell in houses made with hands and charged his hearers with resisting the Holy Spirit. Full of the Spirit, he saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at God's right hand. His hearers threw him out of the city and stoned him while Saul watched, and Stephen prayed that the Lord would not hold this sin against them.

After Stephen's death a great persecution scattered the believers, and Saul ravaged the church, but those scattered went about preaching the word. Philip proclaimed the Christ in Samaria, with signs and great joy; Simon the sorcerer believed but tried to buy the gift of God and was rebuked by Peter. An angel sent Philip to the desert road, where he explained Isaiah to an Ethiopian official, beginning from that Scripture to tell him about Jesus, and baptized him.

At Iconium many believed, but when a plot arose the apostles fled to Lystra and Derbe. At Lystra Paul healed a man lame from birth, and the crowds tried to worship Paul and Barnabas as gods. Some teachers from Judea said Gentile believers must be circumcised to be saved, so Paul and Barnabas went to the apostles and elders in Jerusalem. Peter said God made no distinction, cleansing hearts by faith, and that all are saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus. James concluded from the prophets that Gentiles who turn to God should not be troubled, apart from a few necessary things, and a letter was sent that brought joy. Later Paul and Barnabas disagreed about John Mark and went separate ways, Paul taking Silas.

The Lord told Paul in a vision not to be afraid, for he was with him, and Paul stayed a year and six months teaching the word. Gallio would not judge the case against Paul. Later Priscilla and Aquila explained the way of God more accurately to Apollos, who powerfully showed from the Scriptures that Jesus was the Christ.

In Ephesus Paul met disciples who knew only John's baptism; they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus and received the Holy Spirit. Paul taught for two years, so that all who lived in Asia heard the word of the Lord. God worked special miracles by Paul's hands, and many who had practiced magic burned their books. A silversmith named Demetrius stirred up a riot, fearing loss of trade from the worship of Artemis, until the town clerk quieted the crowd and dismissed the assembly.

At Miletus Paul called the elders of Ephesus, reminded them how he had served the Lord with humility, and told them to shepherd the flock. On the way to Jerusalem, believers urged Paul through the Spirit not to go, and the prophet Agabus bound his own hands and feet with Paul's belt to show what would happen. Paul said he was ready to be bound and even to die for the name of the Lord Jesus, and the believers said, The Lord's will be done. In Jerusalem the brothers received him gladly, and he told what God had done among the Gentiles. Chapter 22Preschool–Grade 5

Acts 22: Paul Tells His Story

Standing on the stairs, Paul told the crowd how he had once persecuted the Way, how a great light shone around him on the road to Damascus, and how Jesus spoke to him. Ananias restored his sight and told him he would be a witness for God to all people of what he had seen and heard. When Paul said the Lord had sent him to the Gentiles, the crowd shouted against him. The commanding officer ordered him examined by scourging, but Paul said he was a Roman citizen, and the officer was afraid and brought him before the council.

Chapter 23Preschool–Grade 5

Acts 23: The Lord Stands by Paul

Before the council Paul said he had lived before God in all good conscience. When he said he was on trial for the hope of the resurrection, the Pharisees and Sadducees argued, and the commanding officer took Paul back to the barracks. The next night the Lord stood by Paul and told him to cheer up, for he must testify also at Rome. When more than forty people plotted against Paul, his sister's son warned the officer, who sent Paul safely by night with soldiers to Felix the governor at Caesarea.

He said he always practiced having a conscience void of offense toward God and men. Felix later heard Paul speak about faith in Christ Jesus, righteousness, self-control, and the judgment to come, and he sent him away until a convenient time. Paul was kept in custody two years.

When Festus asked whether he would go to Jerusalem to be judged, Paul appealed to Caesar, and Festus said, To Caesar you shall go. King Agrippa and Bernice came to Caesarea, and Festus told Agrippa that the charges were questions about their religion and about one Jesus, who was dead, whom Paul affirmed to be alive. Agrippa wished to hear Paul himself.

Paul said he was not disobedient to the heavenly vision, and told how the Christ must suffer and rise. When all hope was lost, Paul told them to cheer up, for an angel had said God had granted him all who sailed with him. Paul urged everyone to eat, gave thanks to God, and broke bread. The ship ran aground and broke apart, but all two hundred seventy-six escaped safely to land.

The people of the island of Malta showed uncommon kindness, kindling a fire for the shipwrecked travelers. A viper fastened on Paul's hand, but he shook it into the fire and was not harmed. Paul prayed, laid hands on the father of Publius, and healed him, and others on the island were cured. In Rome Paul was allowed to stay by himself with a soldier guarding him. He explained the Kingdom of God from the Law and the Prophets; some believed and some did not. For two whole years Paul stayed in his own rented house, welcoming all who came, preaching God's Kingdom and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness, without hindrance.
