Luke 5 shows what happens when people meet Jesus. Simon Peter was an expert fisherman who had caught nothing all night. When Jesus told him to let down his nets, the catch was so great that the nets broke and two boats began to sink. Peter suddenly saw his own sin next to Jesus' holiness. He begged Jesus to leave him. Instead, Jesus gave him a new calling: from now on he would catch people.
Jesus then did things only God can do. He touched a man with leprosy, a disease that made a person unclean, and the man was healed. When friends lowered a paralyzed man through a roof, Jesus first said his sins were forgiven. The teachers asked who can forgive sins but God alone. Jesus healed the man to prove that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins. Everyone was amazed and glorified God.
Next Jesus called Levi, a tax collector most people despised. Levi left everything, followed Jesus, and held a great feast. When the Pharisees complained, Jesus compared Himself to a doctor. Healthy people do not need a doctor, but sick people do. He came to call sinners, not the righteous, to repentance. He also said new wine needs new wineskins, because His Kingdom brings something new.
