Fishers of People

Read the Story

Jesus taught a big crowd from Simon Peter's boat. Then He told Peter to go into deep water and let down the nets. Peter had worked all night and caught nothing. Still, he obeyed. The nets filled with so many fish that two boats began to sink! Peter fell down and said he was a sinful man. Jesus told him not to be afraid. From now on he would catch people.

Jesus touched a man with leprosy and made him clean. Then some men brought a friend who was paralyzed. They could not get through the crowd. So they climbed on the roof and lowered him down! Jesus forgave the man's sins. Then He told him to get up and walk, and he did.

Jesus also called Levi, a tax collector. Levi left everything and followed Him. He gave a big feast for Jesus. Jesus said He came to call sinners to turn back to God.

Leaving Everything for Jesus

Name Date

Read and Think

One morning Jesus sat in Simon Peter's boat and taught the crowd on the shore. Then He told Peter to row into deep water and let down the nets. Peter had fished all night without catching anything. But he said he would do it because Jesus said so. The catch was so large that the nets began to break. Two boats were filled so full they began to sink.

Peter realized he was standing before someone holy. He fell at Jesus' knees and said he was a sinful man. Jesus told him not to be afraid. Peter, James and John brought their boats to land, left everything, and followed Him.

Jesus kept showing His power and mercy. He touched a man with leprosy and healed him. He forgave and healed a paralyzed man whose friends lowered him through a roof. He called Levi, a tax collector. When leaders complained that Jesus ate with sinners, He said sick people need a doctor. He came to call sinners to repentance.

Luke 5 · Grade 5

The Doctor for Sinners

Name Date

Read and Think

Luke 5 shows what happens when people meet Jesus. Simon Peter was an expert fisherman who had caught nothing all night. When Jesus told him to let down his nets, the catch was so great that the nets broke and two boats began to sink. Peter suddenly saw his own sin next to Jesus' holiness. He begged Jesus to leave him. Instead, Jesus gave him a new calling: from now on he would catch people.

Jesus then did things only God can do. He touched a man with leprosy, a disease that made a person unclean, and the man was healed. When friends lowered a paralyzed man through a roof, Jesus first said his sins were forgiven. The teachers asked who can forgive sins but God alone. Jesus healed the man to prove that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins. Everyone was amazed and glorified God.

Next Jesus called Levi, a tax collector most people despised. Levi left everything, followed Jesus, and held a great feast. When the Pharisees complained, Jesus compared Himself to a doctor. Healthy people do not need a doctor, but sick people do. He came to call sinners, not the righteous, to repentance. He also said new wine needs new wineskins, because His Kingdom brings something new.

Show What You Know

  1. Why did Peter ask Jesus to leave him?

  2. Why was touching a man with leprosy surprising?

  3. Why did the teachers object when Jesus forgave sins?

  4. How did Jesus prove He had authority to forgive sins?

  5. What did Jesus mean by comparing Himself to a doctor?
