Luke 19 shows the mission of Jesus in one sentence: He came to seek and to save the lost. Zacchaeus proves it. As a chief tax collector, he worked for Rome and took extra money from his own people. Yet Jesus called him by name and invited Himself to his home. The crowd saw a sinner, but Jesus saw a son of Abraham who needed rescue. Zacchaeus's changed life, giving to the poor and making things right, was the fruit of salvation, not the price of it.
Because many expected God's Kingdom to appear immediately, Jesus told a parable. A nobleman went away to receive a kingdom. His servants each received a mina to invest. Some citizens hated him and refused his rule. When he returned, he rewarded faithful servants and judged those who rejected him. Jesus, our King, has gone to heaven and will return. Until then, He calls us to faithful service.
Then Jesus entered Jerusalem as King, riding a colt as Zechariah had foretold. The disciples shouted praise and said, Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Jesus wept over the city, because it did not know the things that make for peace. In the temple, He drove out those who were selling. Each day He taught there, and the people hung on His words while the leaders looked for a way to destroy Him.
