Salvation Comes Home

Name Date

Read the Story

Jesus passed through Jericho. Zacchaeus, a chief tax collector, was rich but short. He ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see Jesus. Jesus looked up and called him by name. He said He must stay at his house today. People grumbled that Jesus visited a sinner. But Zacchaeus stood up and promised to give half his goods to the poor. He would pay back four times anyone he had cheated. Jesus said salvation had come to his house.

Jesus told a story about a nobleman who gave money to his servants before going away. The faithful servants used it well and were rewarded. One hid the money and did nothing.

Then Jesus sent for a colt. He rode toward Jerusalem while people spread their cloaks on the road. The crowd praised God. Some Pharisees told Jesus to stop them. He said if they kept quiet, the stones would cry out.

For the Son of Man came to seek and to save that which was lost.”

Luke 19 · Grade 4

The King Comes

Name Date

Read and Think

Luke 19 begins in Jericho with a man everyone disliked. Zacchaeus was a chief tax collector who had grown rich by cheating. He climbed a tree to see Jesus. Jesus stopped, looked up, and called him by name. Jesus chose to stay at his house, and the crowd grumbled. Meeting Jesus changed Zacchaeus. He promised to give generously and repay those he had cheated four times over. Jesus said He came to seek and to save the lost.

Jesus told a parable about a nobleman who went to a far country to receive a kingdom. He gave each servant money to use while he was gone. When he returned, faithful servants were rewarded with cities to rule. One servant hid the money in a cloth because he was afraid. He lost what he had. Jesus wants us to use His gifts faithfully until He comes back.

Jesus rode a colt down the Mount of Olives, and a crowd of disciples praised God. When He saw Jerusalem, He wept because the city did not recognize God's visit. In the temple, He drove out the sellers. He said God's house should be a house of prayer, and He taught there every day.

Luke 19 · Grade 5

To Seek and to Save

Name Date

Read and Think

Luke 19 shows the mission of Jesus in one sentence: He came to seek and to save the lost. Zacchaeus proves it. As a chief tax collector, he worked for Rome and took extra money from his own people. Yet Jesus called him by name and invited Himself to his home. The crowd saw a sinner, but Jesus saw a son of Abraham who needed rescue. Zacchaeus's changed life, giving to the poor and making things right, was the fruit of salvation, not the price of it.

Because many expected God's Kingdom to appear immediately, Jesus told a parable. A nobleman went away to receive a kingdom. His servants each received a mina to invest. Some citizens hated him and refused his rule. When he returned, he rewarded faithful servants and judged those who rejected him. Jesus, our King, has gone to heaven and will return. Until then, He calls us to faithful service.

Then Jesus entered Jerusalem as King, riding a colt as Zechariah had foretold. The disciples shouted praise and said, Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Jesus wept over the city, because it did not know the things that make for peace. In the temple, He drove out those who were selling. Each day He taught there, and the people hung on His words while the leaders looked for a way to destroy Him.

Show What You Know

  1. Why is Zacchaeus's changed life called the fruit of salvation and not the price of it?

  2. What did the crowd see in Zacchaeus, and what did Jesus see?

  3. Why did Jesus tell the parable of the minas?

  4. How does the parable apply to Jesus' followers today?

  5. How did the people and the leaders respond to Jesus' teaching in the temple?
