Joshua 22 begins with honor. The Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh had crossed the Jordan to fight beside their brothers, and now Joshua released them. He told them to take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law which Moses the servant of Yahweh commanded you, to love Yahweh your God, to walk in all his ways, to keep his commandments, to hold fast to him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul. He blessed them, and they went home with much wealth.
At the Jordan they built a great altar to look at. The other tribes heard of it and gathered at Shiloh to go up against them to war. Yet they sent Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest with ten princes first. Phinehas asked, What trespass is this that you have committed against the God of Israel? He reminded them of past sins that had brought judgment on all Israel.
The eastern tribes answered with an oath: The Mighty One, God, Yahweh, he knows. They explained that the altar was a pattern of Yahweh's altar, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice; but it is a witness between us and you. Phinehas said, Today we know that Yahweh is among us. The children of Israel blessed God and spoke no more of war. The altar was named A Witness Between Us that Yahweh is God. In the New Testament, Paul urges believers to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace (Ephesians 4:3).
