Joshua 22 · Grade 4
Ask Before You Accuse
Read and Think
Joshua sent the eastern tribes home with a blessing. They had kept their promise and had not left their brothers. He charged them to love Yahweh your God, to walk in all his ways, to keep his commandments, to hold fast to him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.
By the Jordan they built a great altar to look at. The rest of Israel feared rebellion against Yahweh and gathered at Shiloh to go to war. But first they sent Phinehas and ten princes to speak with them.
The eastern tribes explained that the altar was a copy, not for burnt offering nor for sacrifice. It was a witness that they too would serve Yahweh, so later children could not say they had no portion in Yahweh. Phinehas said, Today we know that Yahweh is among us. They named the altar A Witness Between Us that Yahweh is God.
