Joshua 22 · Grade 3
A Witness Between Us
Read the Story
Joshua sent the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh home. They had helped their brothers for many days. Joshua told them to love Yahweh, walk in His ways, and serve Him with all their heart.
Near the Jordan they built a great altar. The rest of Israel gathered at Shiloh to go to war against them. But first they sent Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest with ten princes.
The eastern tribes said the altar was not for burnt offering or sacrifice. It was a witness, so their children would not be told they had no portion in Yahweh. Phinehas was pleased. Israel blessed God and spoke no more of war.
Memory Verse
“The children of Reuben and the children of Gad named the altar “A Witness Between Us that Yahweh is God.””
