Chapter 1Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 1: White as Snow

Isaiah the son of Amoz saw a vision about Judah and Jerusalem in the days of four kings. Yahweh says his people have rebelled against him, even though an ox knows its owner. Their land has been hurt, but Yahweh has left a small remnant. God does not delight in offerings from people who keep doing evil. He calls them to wash themselves, stop doing evil, learn to do well, seek justice, and defend the fatherless and the widow. He invites them to reason together and promises that sins like scarlet can be as white as snow. Zion will be redeemed with justice.

Chapter 2Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 2: The Mountain of the Lord

Isaiah sees what will happen in the latter days. The mountain of Yahweh's house will be raised above the hills, and all nations will come to it. Many peoples will say they want to go up so God can teach them his ways. God will judge between nations, and they will beat their swords into plowshares and not learn war any more. Isaiah calls the house of Jacob to walk in the light of Yahweh. The people had filled the land with idols and trusted in riches and pride. On the day of Yahweh, the proud will be brought low, the idols will pass away, and Yahweh alone will be exalted.

Chapter 3Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 3: God Judges Fairly

Yahweh warns that he will take away Jerusalem and Judah's supply of bread and water and their leaders, because their words and actions were against him. The people would not even want to be rulers. Yet Isaiah gives a promise: tell the righteous it will be well with them, for they will eat the fruit of their deeds. Yahweh stands to judge and accuses the leaders of taking from the poor. He also warns the proud daughters of Zion that their fine jewelry and clothes will be taken away.

Chapter 4Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 4: A Shelter from the Storm

Isaiah 4 is a short chapter of hope. In that day, Yahweh's branch will be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the land will be the glory of the survivors of Israel. Those who are left in Zion will be called holy after the Lord has washed away the filth of the city. Yahweh will create a cloud and smoke by day and a shining flaming fire by night over Mount Zion. There will be a shade from the heat and a refuge and shelter from storm and rain.

Chapter 5Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 5: The Song of the Vineyard

Isaiah sings a song about a vineyard on a fruitful hill. The owner cleared it, planted the choicest vine, built a tower, and looked for good grapes, but it yielded wild grapes. The vineyard is the house of Israel. God looked for justice and righteousness but found oppression and a cry of distress. Isaiah then gives a series of woes against greed, drunkenness, calling evil good, pride, and taking bribes. Because they rejected the law of Yahweh, God will lift up a banner to call a strong nation from far away.

Chapter 6Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 6: Holy, Holy, Holy

In the year that King Uzziah died, Isaiah saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up. Seraphim with six wings called out that Yahweh of Armies is holy and that the whole earth is full of his glory. Isaiah cried out that he was a man of unclean lips. One of the seraphim touched his mouth with a live coal from the altar, and his sin was forgiven. When the Lord asked whom he should send, Isaiah said, Here I am. Send me! God sent him to a people who would not understand, and told him a holy seed would remain like a stump.

Chapter 7Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 7: The Sign of Immanuel

In the days of King Ahaz, the kings of Syria and Israel came up to fight against Jerusalem, and Ahaz and his people trembled like trees in the wind. Yahweh sent Isaiah and his son Shearjashub to tell Ahaz to keep calm and not be afraid, because the enemies' plan would not stand. Isaiah warned that if Ahaz would not believe, he would not be established. God told Ahaz to ask for a sign, but Ahaz refused. So the Lord himself gave a sign: the virgin will conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. Isaiah also warned that the king of Assyria would come and the land would grow briers and thorns.

Chapter 8Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 8: God Is with Us

Yahweh told Isaiah to write the name Maher Shalal Hash Baz on a large tablet. Isaiah's son was given that name as a sign that the king of Assyria would carry away the riches of Damascus and Samaria. Because the people refused the gentle waters of Shiloah, Assyria would come like a flood. But the nations' plans would not stand, for God is with us. God told Isaiah not to fear what the people feared, but to respect Yahweh of Armies as holy. Isaiah said he would wait for Yahweh, and he told the people to turn to the law instead of to wizards.

Chapter 9Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 9: A Child Is Born

Isaiah says there will be no more gloom for Galilee. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light, and God has increased their joy and broken the yoke of their oppressor. A child is born to us and a son is given. His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His government and peace will have no end on David's throne. Then Isaiah warns proud Israel, which would not turn to Yahweh, that his hand is stretched out still.

Chapter 10Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 10: The Proud Ax and the Remnant

Isaiah warned leaders who made unfair laws that robbed the poor, widows, and orphans. God said he would use Assyria like a rod to correct his people, but the king of Assyria was proud and boasted that his own strength had won his victories. God asked whether an ax should brag against the one who chops with it. God promised to humble the proud king. He also promised that a remnant of Israel would return to the mighty God and lean on Yahweh in truth. He told his people in Zion not to be afraid of the Assyrian, because the yoke would be lifted from their shoulders.

Chapter 11Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 11: The Branch from Jesse

Isaiah promised that a shoot would come from the stump of Jesse, King David's father. Yahweh's Spirit would rest on him with wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge, and the fear of Yahweh. He would judge the poor with righteousness. In his kingdom the wolf would live with the lamb, and a little child would lead them. No one would hurt or destroy on God's holy mountain, for the earth would be full of the knowledge of Yahweh as the waters cover the sea. The nations would seek the root of Jesse, and God would gather his scattered people from the four corners of the earth.

Chapter 12Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 12: A Song of Salvation

Isaiah 12 is a short song of praise for the day when God's people are saved. They will thank Yahweh because his anger has turned away and he comforts them. They will say that God is their salvation, and they will trust and not be afraid, because Yahweh is their strength and song. With joy they will draw water from the wells of salvation. They will call on God's name, tell the nations what he has done, and sing because the Holy One of Israel is great among them.

Chapter 13Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 13: God Humbles Proud Babylon

Isaiah received a message about Babylon. God would call armies from far away to bring the day of Yahweh against the proud city. God said he would punish the world for its evil and cause the arrogance of the proud to cease. He would stir up the Medes against Babylon. Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, would become an empty place where no one would live, and wild animals would make their homes in its ruins.

Chapter 14Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 14: The Proud King Brought Low

God promised to have compassion on Israel and give his people rest from their hard service. Then they would sing a song about the fall of the king of Babylon. The whole earth would be at rest and break out in song because the oppressor had ceased. The king had said in his heart that he would ascend into heaven and make himself like the Most High, but he would be brought down. God swore that his plans would stand. He would break Assyria in his land. God also warned the Philistines, and he declared that Yahweh has founded Zion as a refuge for the afflicted.

Chapter 15Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 15: A Cry for Moab

Isaiah gave a message about Moab, a nation east of Israel. Its cities would be laid waste in a night. The people of Moab went up to their high places to weep, and everyone wailed in the streets and on the housetops. Isaiah said his heart cried out for Moab. The waters dried up, the grass withered, and the people carried their stored goods away. The cry of Moab went around all its borders.

Chapter 16Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 16: A Throne of Loving Kindness

Moab was told to send lambs as tribute to the ruler in Zion. The people of Moab were like scattered birds at the river crossing. Isaiah urged Moab to shelter the outcasts and hide those who fled. He promised that one day a throne would be established in loving kindness, in the tent of David, with a ruler seeking justice and righteousness. But Moab was very proud, and its vineyards and joyful harvest songs would cease. Isaiah's heart sounded like a harp for Moab. Within three years, Moab's glory would be brought low.

Chapter 17Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 17: Look to Your Maker

Isaiah gave a message about Damascus, the capital of Syria, and about Israel, its partner. Damascus would become a heap of ruins, and Israel's glory would grow thin, like a field after harvest with only a few olives left at the top of the tree. In that day, people would look to their Maker and respect the Holy One of Israel instead of the idols they had made. Israel had forgotten the God of their salvation, the rock of their strength. The nations roared like the sea, but God would rebuke them, and they would flee like chaff before the wind.

Chapter 18Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 18: A Message to Ethiopia

Isaiah spoke to Ethiopia, a land beyond the rivers that sent messengers in boats of papyrus. He called all the people of the world to look when a banner is lifted on the mountains and to listen when the trumpet is blown. God said he would wait quietly and watch from his dwelling place, like clear heat in sunshine or a cloud of dew in harvest. Before the harvest, God would cut off the branches. In that time, a present would be brought to Yahweh of Armies from that tall and smooth people, to Mount Zion.

Chapter 19Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 19: Blessed Be Egypt

Isaiah gave a message about Egypt. Yahweh would ride on a swift cloud, and Egypt's idols would tremble. Egypt would turn against itself, its wise men would give foolish advice, and the Nile would dry up so that fishermen and weavers had no work. But in that day there would be an altar to Yahweh in the middle of Egypt. The Egyptians would cry to Yahweh, and he would send them a savior. God would strike and heal Egypt, and there would be a highway from Egypt to Assyria where both would worship together with Israel. God would say, Blessed be Egypt my people, Assyria the work of my hands, and Israel my inheritance.

Chapter 20Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 20: Isaiah Walks Barefoot

In the year that the Assyrian commander came to Ashdod and captured it, Yahweh told Isaiah to take off his sackcloth and sandals. Isaiah obeyed and walked barefoot for three years as a sign. God explained that the king of Assyria would lead away captives from Egypt and Ethiopia in the same way. Those who had trusted Egypt and Ethiopia for help would be dismayed and ashamed. The people of the coastland would ask how they could escape.

Chapter 21Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 21: Watchman, What of the Night?

Isaiah saw a hard vision about Babylon, called the wilderness of the sea. God told him to set a watchman to report what he saw. The watchman stood on the watchtower day and night until he saw riders coming, and then he announced, Fallen, fallen is Babylon. Next, someone from Seir called out, Watchman, what of the night? The watchman answered that the morning comes, and also the night, and told them to come back and ask again. Isaiah also spoke about Arabia, where the people of Tema brought water and bread to those fleeing from battle.

Chapter 22Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 22: The Key of David

Isaiah gave a message about Jerusalem, called the valley of vision. While enemies came near, the people celebrated on the housetops instead of turning to God. They checked their weapons, repaired the walls, and stored water, but they did not look to the God who made it all. God called them to weeping and repentance, but they said, Let's eat and drink, for tomorrow we will die. God also spoke against Shebna, a proud official who built himself a fine tomb. God would remove Shebna and give his office to Eliakim, his servant. God would lay the key of David's house on Eliakim's shoulder, so that what he opened no one could shut.

Chapter 23Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 23: Proud Tyre

Isaiah gave a message about Tyre, a rich trading city by the sea whose merchants were like princes. The ships of Tarshish would wail because Tyre's harbor was laid waste. Isaiah asked who had planned this against Tyre, and he answered that Yahweh of Armies had planned it to humble the pride of all glory. Tyre would be forgotten for seventy years. Afterward, Tyre would trade again, but its earnings would be holy to Yahweh and would provide food and clothing for those who dwell before Yahweh.

Chapter 24Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 24: Yahweh Reigns on Mount Zion

Isaiah described a time when God would shake the whole earth because people had broken his laws and his everlasting covenant. The joy of music and harvest would end, and everyone, rich and poor alike, would face God's judgment. Yet from the ends of the earth people would lift up their voices and shout for the majesty of Yahweh. They would glorify Yahweh in the east and in the islands of the sea. In the end, the sun and moon would seem dim, because Yahweh of Armies would reign on Mount Zion in glory.

Chapter 25Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 25: He Has Swallowed Up Death

Isaiah praised Yahweh for doing wonderful things, planned long ago in faithfulness and truth. God had been a stronghold to the poor and needy, a refuge from the storm and a shade from the heat. On his mountain, Yahweh of Armies would make a feast of rich food for all peoples. He would remove the veil spread over all nations and swallow up death forever. The Lord Yahweh would wipe away tears from all faces. In that day, people would say, Behold, this is our God! We have waited for him, and he will save us!

Chapter 26Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 26: Perfect Peace

Isaiah wrote a song that would be sung in Judah about a strong city whose gates open for the righteous nation that keeps faith. God keeps in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in him. Isaiah urged everyone to trust in Yahweh forever, for he is an everlasting Rock. He described seeking God in the night and waiting for him. Other lords had ruled over the people, but they would remember only God's name. Isaiah gave a promise: Your dead shall live. He told God's people to hide for a little while until God's anger passed.

Chapter 27Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 27: A Pleasant Vineyard

Isaiah said that in that day Yahweh would defeat leviathan, the twisted serpent, the monster that is in the sea. Then God sang about his people as a pleasant vineyard. Yahweh is its keeper, watering it every moment and guarding it night and day. In days to come, Jacob would take root, and Israel would blossom and fill the world with fruit. God would remove Israel's sin when they broke down their idol altars. At the end, a great trumpet would sound, and those scattered in Assyria and Egypt would come and worship Yahweh on the holy mountain at Jerusalem.

Chapter 28Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 28: A Precious Cornerstone

Isaiah warned the proud leaders of Ephraim, whose glory was like a fading flower. In that day, Yahweh of Armies would be a crown of glory to the remnant of his people. The leaders of Jerusalem mocked Isaiah's teaching as baby talk, precept on precept, precept on precept. They boasted that they had made a covenant with death. But God said, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious cornerstone of a sure foundation. He who believes shall not act hastily. God would measure with justice and righteousness. Isaiah ended with a parable about a farmer who plows, plants, and threshes wisely, because God teaches him. God is wonderful in counsel and excellent in wisdom.

Chapter 29Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 29: Honor with the Heart

Isaiah warned Ariel, a name for Jerusalem, that hard times were coming, but God would suddenly scatter her enemies like dust and chaff. The people were spiritually asleep, and God's message was like a sealed book they could not read. The Lord said they honored him with their lips, but their hearts were far from him. Isaiah asked whether clay could say of the potter, He didn't make me. Then God promised a great reversal: the deaf would hear the words of the book, the blind would see, and the humble would increase their joy in Yahweh. Those who erred in spirit would come to understanding.

Chapter 30Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 30: This Is the Way

God warned Judah not to go down to Egypt for help, because Egypt's help was useless. God told Isaiah to write the message on a tablet for the time to come, because the people did not want to hear God's law. God said, You will be saved in returning and rest. Your strength will be in quietness and in confidence, but they refused. Yet Yahweh waits to be gracious, and blessed are all who wait for him. God promised to answer when his people cry. Their teachers would no longer be hidden, and they would hear a voice behind them saying, This is the way. Walk in it. God would send rain and heal his people, and Assyria would be defeated.

Chapter 31Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 31: Like Birds Hovering

Isaiah warned those who went down to Egypt for help and trusted in horses and chariots instead of looking to the Holy One of Israel. The Egyptians were only men, not God, and their horses were flesh, not spirit. Yahweh said he would come down to fight on Mount Zion like a lion that is not afraid of shepherds. As birds hovering, so Yahweh of Armies will protect Jerusalem. God called the children of Israel to return to him and throw away their idols. Assyria would fall, but not by a human sword.

Chapter 32Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 32: A King Shall Reign in Righteousness

Isaiah announced that a king would reign in righteousness and princes would rule in justice. Each would be like a hiding place from the wind, streams of water in a dry place, and the shade of a large rock in a weary land. Eyes would see clearly and ears would listen. Foolish and wicked people would no longer be called noble, but the noble would plan noble things. Isaiah warned the women who were at ease that hard times were coming, until the Spirit is poured on us from on high. Then the wilderness would become a fruitful field, and righteousness would bring peace, quietness, and confidence forever.

Chapter 33Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 33: Yahweh Is Our King

Isaiah warned the destroyer who had not been destroyed and prayed, Yahweh, be gracious to us. We have waited for you. Be our strength every morning. Yahweh is exalted and fills Zion with justice and righteousness, and the fear of Yahweh is his people's treasure. When the land mourned, God said, Now I will arise. Isaiah asked who could live near God's holy fire and answered: the one who walks righteously and speaks blamelessly. That person will dwell on high, with bread and water supplied. Their eyes will see the king in his beauty and Jerusalem as a quiet home. Yahweh is our judge, lawgiver, and king, and he will save us. No one there will say, I am sick. The people will be forgiven.

Chapter 34Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 34: God Makes Things Right

Isaiah called all the nations to listen, because Yahweh was angry with nations that fought against his people. The prophecy focuses on Edom, a neighbor that had long been an enemy of Israel. Isaiah said that Yahweh has a day of vengeance, a year of recompense for the cause of Zion. Edom's land would become empty, its nobles would have no kingdom, and wild birds and animals would live there. Isaiah told readers to search in the book of Yahweh and read, because not one of God's words would fail.

Chapter 35Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 35: The Holy Way

Isaiah described a wonderful change. The wilderness and the dry land would be glad, and the desert would blossom like a rose. Isaiah said to strengthen the weak hands and tell fearful hearts, Be strong! Don't be afraid! because God would come and save them. Then the blind would see, the deaf would hear, the lame would leap like a deer, and the mute would sing. Water would break out in the desert. A highway called The Holy Way would be there, and no lion would be on it. Yahweh's ransomed ones would return to Zion with singing, everlasting joy would be on their heads, and sorrow and sighing would flee away.

Chapter 36Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 36: What Confidence Is This?

In the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria captured the fortified cities of Judah. He sent his officer, Rabshakeh, with a great army to Jerusalem. Standing by the aqueduct of the upper pool, Rabshakeh mocked Hezekiah's trust. He asked, What confidence is this in which you trust? He claimed Egypt was a broken reed and that Yahweh himself had sent Assyria. When Hezekiah's officials asked him to speak in Aramaic, he shouted louder in Hebrew so the people on the wall could hear. He told them not to let Hezekiah make them trust in Yahweh and boasted that no god had saved any land from Assyria. But the people remained silent, for the king had commanded, Don't answer him. The officials went to Hezekiah with their clothes torn.

Chapter 37Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 37: Hezekiah Spreads the Letter

When King Hezekiah heard Rabshakeh's words, he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth, and went into Yahweh's house. He sent his officials to Isaiah, and Isaiah answered, Don't be afraid of the words that you have heard. Sennacherib sent a threatening letter. Hezekiah read it, went up to Yahweh's house, and spread it before Yahweh. He prayed, You are the God, even you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth. He asked God to save them so all the kingdoms would know that he alone is Yahweh. Isaiah sent God's answer. Assyria's king had mocked the Holy One of Israel, but he would not enter Jerusalem. God said, I will defend this city to save it. That night Yahweh's angel struck the Assyrian camp, and Sennacherib returned to Nineveh.

Chapter 38Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 38: Fifteen More Years

Hezekiah became sick and was near death. Isaiah told him to set his house in order. Hezekiah turned his face to the wall, prayed, and wept bitterly. God sent Isaiah back with a message: I have heard your prayer. I have seen your tears. Behold, I will add fifteen years to your life. God also promised to defend Jerusalem from Assyria. As a sign, God made the shadow on the sundial of Ahaz go back ten steps. After he recovered, Hezekiah wrote a song. He said God had cast all his sins behind his back, and that the living would praise God and fathers would make known God's truth to their children. Isaiah told them to put a cake of figs on the boil, and Hezekiah would recover.

Chapter 39Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 39: Envoys from Babylon

Merodach-baladan, king of Babylon, sent letters and a present to Hezekiah, because he had heard that Hezekiah had been sick and had recovered. Hezekiah was pleased and showed the messengers his whole treasure house: silver, gold, spices, oil, and armor. There was nothing he did not show them. Isaiah asked who the men were and what they had seen. Hezekiah answered, They have seen all that is in my house. Isaiah then gave God's word: the days were coming when everything in Hezekiah's house would be carried to Babylon. Hezekiah said, Yahweh's word which you have spoken is good. He added, For there will be peace and truth in my days.

Chapter 40Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 40: Comfort, Comfort My People

God said, Comfort, comfort my people. Jerusalem's hard service was over and her sin was pardoned. A voice called out, Prepare the way of Yahweh in the wilderness! Every valley would be raised and every mountain made low, and Yahweh's glory would be revealed. All people are like grass that withers, but the word of our God stands forever. The messenger was to say to Judah's cities, Behold, your God! God would feed his flock like a shepherd and carry the lambs in his arm. No one can compare with God, who measured the waters in his hand and calls each star by name. The everlasting God does not grow weary. He gives power to the weak, and those who wait for Yahweh will renew their strength and mount up with wings like eagles.

Chapter 41Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 41: Don't Be Afraid, I Will Help You

God called the islands and nations to court and asked who had raised up a conqueror from the east. He answered, I, Yahweh, the first, and with the last, I am he. The nations comforted each other and made idols, but God spoke tenderly to Israel: you, Israel, my servant, Jacob whom I have chosen, the offspring of Abraham my friend. He said, Don't you be afraid, for I am with you. God promised to hold Israel's right hand and help them. The poor and needy who seek water would find rivers and springs in the desert, and trees would grow in the wilderness. God challenged the idols to tell the future, but they could do nothing.

Chapter 42Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 42: Behold, My Servant

God introduced his servant: Behold, my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights: I have put my Spirit on him. The servant would bring justice to the nations gently. He would not shout, break a bruised reed, or quench a dimly burning wick, and he would not fail until justice was set on the earth. God would make him a light for the nations, to open blind eyes and free prisoners. God declared new things before they happened and called everyone to sing a new song. God would lead the blind on paths they did not know and make darkness light. Yet Israel, God's servant people, had been blind and deaf to his law.

Chapter 43Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 43: I Have Called You by Your Name

Yahweh, who created and formed Israel, said, Don't be afraid, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by your name. You are mine. When they passed through waters or walked through fire, God would be with them. They were precious and honored in his sight, and he loved them. God would gather his children from east and west. Israel was called to be God's witnesses that he alone is God: Besides me, there is no savior. God told them not to dwell on former things, because he was doing a new thing: making a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. Though Israel had burdened God with their sins, God said, I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake.

Chapter 44Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 44: I Am the First and the Last

God told Jacob his servant not to be afraid, for he would pour water on the thirsty and his Spirit on Israel's descendants. They would spring up like willows by the streams. God declared, I am the first, and I am the last; and besides me there is no God. Isaiah described a craftsman who cuts down a tree, uses half of it to bake bread and warm himself, and makes the rest into a god to worship. The man never stops to ask whether there is a lie in his right hand. God reminded Israel that he had formed them and would not forget them. He said, I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, your transgressions... Return to me, for I have redeemed you. God, who made all things, said of Cyrus, He is my shepherd, and that Jerusalem and the temple would be rebuilt.

Chapter 45Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 45: Look to Me and Be Saved

God spoke to Cyrus, calling him his anointed, and promised to open doors and gates before him. God would do this so that Cyrus and all people would know that he is Yahweh: I am Yahweh, and there is no one else. Besides me, there is no God. God, who made the earth and stretched out the heavens, warned that the clay should not argue with the potter. He would raise Cyrus to rebuild Jerusalem and free the exiles without price. God did not create the earth to be empty but formed it to be inhabited. He invited the whole world: Look to me, and be saved, all the ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other. Every knee would bow to him.

Chapter 46Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 46: I Will Carry You

Bel and Nebo, the gods of Babylon, bowed down. Their idols had to be loaded onto animals and carried, becoming heavy burdens. God said Israel had been carried by him from birth: Even to old age I am he, and even to gray hairs I will carry you. People spent gold to make a god, carried it on their shoulders, and set it in place, but it could not move or answer or save. God told them to remember: I am God, and there is none like me. I declare the end from the beginning. He would call a ravenous bird from the east, a man to carry out his plan. His salvation would not be delayed.

Chapter 47Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 47: Babylon Brought Down

God told proud Babylon to come down from her throne and sit in the dust. She would no longer be called tender and delicate or the mistress of kingdoms. God had been angry with his people and given them into her hand, but she showed them no mercy. Babylon felt secure and said in her heart, I am, and there is no one else besides me. But sudden disaster would come. Her many sorceries and enchantments could not save her. God mocked the astrologers and stargazers: they were like stubble that the fire would burn. No one would be able to save Babylon. Israel's hope was in Our Redeemer, Yahweh of Armies.

Chapter 48Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 48: Leave Babylon!

God spoke to the house of Jacob, who called themselves by Yahweh's name but not in truth or righteousness. He had announced things long before they happened so they could not say their idols did them. Knowing Israel was stubborn, with a neck like iron and a brow of bronze, God now told them new things. For his name's sake he would hold back his anger. Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver. I have chosen you in the furnace of affliction. God is the first and the last who laid the foundation of the earth. He teaches his people what is best and leads them in the way to go. Oh that you had listened to my commandments! Then your peace would have been like a river. God commanded, Leave Babylon! and promised water from the rock as in the desert. But There is no peace for the wicked.

Chapter 49Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 49: A Light to the Nations

God's servant spoke to the islands: Yahweh has called me from the womb. God made his mouth like a sharp sword and hid him like a polished arrow. God told him, You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will be glorified. Though the servant felt he had labored in vain, he trusted God. God said it was too small a task only to restore Israel: I will also give you as a light to the nations, that you may be my salvation to the end of the earth. God promised to bring his people home: they would not hunger or thirst, and he would guide them by springs of water. When Zion said, Yahweh has forsaken me. God answered, Can a woman forget her nursing child...? Yes, these may forget, yet I will not forget you! Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands. Zion's children would return in such numbers that the land would be too small.

Chapter 50Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 50: The Servant Who Listens

God asked Israel where their mother's certificate of divorce was. He had not sold them away; they were sent away because of their own sins. God still had power to save: Is my hand shortened at all, that it can't redeem? Then the Servant spoke in what many call the third Servant Song: The Lord Yahweh has given me the tongue of those who are taught, that I may know how to sustain with words him who is weary. God awakened his ear morning by morning, and he did not turn back. He gave his back to those who beat him and did not hide his face from shame and spitting. For the Lord Yahweh will help me... I have set my face like a flint. Isaiah urged anyone walking in darkness to trust in Yahweh's name, and rely on his God, warning those who light their own fires.

Chapter 51Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 51: Awake, Awake!

God called those who seek him to look to Abraham and Sarah: he called Abraham when he was one and made him many. God would comfort Zion and make her desert like the garden of Yahweh. His salvation would go out, and though the heavens would vanish like smoke, my salvation will be forever. God told them not to fear the insults of people who will wither like grass. Isaiah called on God's arm to awake as when God dried up the sea for the redeemed to cross. Those ransomed by Yahweh will return, and come with singing to Zion. God said, I, even I, am he who comforts you. God told Jerusalem to wake up, for he had taken the cup of staggering from her hand.

Isaiah 52: How Beautiful Are the Feet

God called Zion to awake and put on strength and beautiful garments, and to shake off the dust and chains. You were sold for nothing; and you will be redeemed without money. God's people had been taken by Egypt and Assyria, and his name was blasphemed, but they would know his name. How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace... who says to Zion, Your God reigns! The watchmen would shout for joy, and the ruins of Jerusalem would sing, for Yahweh had comforted his people. All the ends of the earth would see God's salvation. God told his people to depart and be clean, going out not in haste, for Yahweh would go before them. What many call the fourth Servant Song began: Behold, my servant will deal wisely. He will be exalted and lifted up. Many were astonished at him, for his appearance was marred, yet he would cleanse many nations.

Isaiah 53: The Suffering Servant

Isaiah asked, Who has believed our message? The Servant grew up like a tender plant from dry ground, with no beauty that would draw people to him. He was despised and rejected by men, a man of suffering and acquainted with disease. Yet Surely he has borne our sickness and carried our suffering. But he was pierced for our transgressions. He was crushed for our iniquities. The punishment that brought our peace was on him; and by his wounds we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray... and Yahweh has laid on him the iniquity of us all. Like a lamb, he was silent before those who afflicted him. He was cut off from the land of the living, though he had done no violence. After his suffering he will see the light and be satisfied, and My righteous servant will justify many. He bore the sins of many and made intercession for the transgressors. In the New Testament, Philip explained this passage to an Ethiopian official as being about Jesus (Acts 8:32-35).

Chapter 54Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 54: My Loving Kindness Will Not Depart

God called the barren woman, Zion, to sing, for her children would be many. Enlarge the place of your tent... lengthen your cords, and strengthen your stakes. She should not fear shame, for your Maker is your husband; Yahweh of Armies is his name. God said, For a small moment I have forsaken you, but I will gather you with great mercies. As he swore after Noah's flood, he swore not to be angry with her. For the mountains may depart, and the hills be removed, but my loving kindness will not depart from you. God would rebuild Zion with jewels. All your children will be taught by Yahweh, and your children's peace will be great. No weapon that is formed against you will prevail.

Chapter 55Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 55: Come to the Waters

God invited everyone who is thirsty: Come, everyone who thirsts, to the waters! Come, he who has no money, buy, and eat! He asked why they spent money on what does not satisfy. Hear, and your soul will live. I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David. Nations would run to God's people. Seek Yahweh while he may be found. Call on him while he is near. The wicked should return to God, for he will freely pardon. God said his thoughts and ways are higher than ours. As rain and snow water the earth, so is my word that goes out of my mouth: it will not return to me void. God's people would go out with joy, and the trees would clap their hands.

Chapter 56Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 56: A House of Prayer for All Peoples

God said, Maintain justice and do what is right, for my salvation is near. He blessed the one who keeps the Sabbath and keeps his hand from doing evil. Foreigners who joined themselves to Yahweh should not say God would separate them from his people. God also promised eunuchs who held fast his covenant a memorial and a name better than sons and daughters. Foreigners who love Yahweh's name and keep his covenant would be brought to his holy mountain, for my house will be called a house of prayer for all peoples. God would gather others besides Israel's outcasts. But Israel's watchmen were blind, like dogs that cannot bark, lazy shepherds who only sought their own gain and wanted only wine and strong drink.

Chapter 57Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 57: Peace to the Far and Near

The righteous died, and no one took it to heart that they were taken away from evil into peace. God then rebuked those who had turned to idols and worthless worship, saying their idols would not save them when they cried out, but he who takes refuge in me will possess the land. God called for the road to be prepared for his people. God, the high and lofty One who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy, dwells in the high and holy place, with him also who is of a contrite and humble spirit. God would not be angry forever. He had seen his people's ways and would heal them and lead them. Peace, peace, to him who is far off and to him who is near, says Yahweh; and I will heal them. But the wicked are like the troubled sea, and there is no peace for the wicked.

Chapter 58Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 58: The Fast God Chooses

God told Isaiah, Cry aloud! Don't spare! Lift up your voice like a trumpet! The people fasted and asked why God did not notice, but on their fast days they pursued their own business, oppressed their workers, and quarreled. God asked, Isn't this the fast that I have chosen: to release the bonds of wickedness... to let the oppressed go free? He wanted them to share bread with the hungry, bring the homeless poor into their homes, and clothe those in need. Then your light will break out as the morning. Then you will call, and Yahweh will answer. If they poured themselves out for the hungry, God would guide them continually and make them like a watered garden. They would rebuild the ancient ruins. Those who call the Sabbath a delight would delight in Yahweh.

Chapter 59Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 59: A Redeemer Will Come to Zion

Behold, Yahweh's hand is not shortened, that it can't save; nor his ear dull, that it can't hear. But your iniquities have separated you and your God. Isaiah described the people's sins: violence, lies, and injustice. They did not know the way of peace. Then the people confessed, We look for light, but see darkness. They admitted, our transgressions are multiplied before you. Truth had fallen in the street. God saw that there was no one to intercede, so his own arm brought salvation to him. He put on righteousness as a breastplate and a helmet of salvation. A Redeemer will come to Zion, and to those who turn from disobedience in Jacob, says Yahweh. God promised his Spirit and his words would not depart from his people forever.

Chapter 60Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 60: Arise, Shine!

God called Zion: Arise, shine; for your light has come, and Yahweh's glory has risen on you! Though darkness covered the earth, God's glory would be seen on his people. Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising. Zion's sons and daughters would return, and the wealth of the nations would come: camels from Midian, gold and frankincense from Sheba, and flocks for God's house. Foreigners would rebuild her walls, and her gates would be open continually. Those who had despised Zion would bow and call her Yahweh's City. Violence would no longer be heard, and she would call her walls Salvation and her gates Praise. The sun will be no more your light by day... but Yahweh will be your everlasting light. The little one will become a thousand.

Chapter 61Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 61: Good News to the Humble

The speaker said, The Lord Yahweh's Spirit is on me, because Yahweh has anointed me to preach good news to the humble. He was sent to bind up the broken hearted, proclaim liberty to the captives, announce the year of Yahweh's favor, and comfort all who mourn, giving them a garland for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness. They would be called trees of righteousness, the planting of Yahweh. They would rebuild ancient ruins, and they would be called Yahweh's priests. Instead of shame they would have a double portion and everlasting joy. God loves justice and would make an everlasting covenant with them. The speaker rejoiced: he has clothed me with the garments of salvation. In the New Testament, Jesus read this passage in the synagogue at Nazareth and said it was fulfilled that day (Luke 4:17-21).

Chapter 62Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 62: A Crown of Beauty

The prophet said he would not keep silent for Zion's sake until her righteousness shone like the dawn. The nations would see her glory, and she would be given a new name. You will also be a crown of beauty in Yahweh's hand. She would no longer be called Forsaken or Desolate, but Hephzibah (my delight is in her), for Yahweh delights in you. As a bridegroom rejoices over his bride, so your God will rejoice over you. God set watchmen on Jerusalem's walls who would never be silent. God swore that enemies would no longer eat her grain. The people were told to prepare the way and lift up a banner, for Behold, your salvation comes! They would be called The Holy People, Yahweh's Redeemed, and Jerusalem Sought Out, A City Not Forsaken.

Chapter 63Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 63: Remembering God's Kindness

A mighty figure came from Edom in stained garments, saying, It is I who speak in righteousness, mighty to save. He had acted alone in judgment because no one helped. Then Isaiah turned to praise: I will tell of the loving kindnesses of Yahweh. God had said, Surely, they are my people. So he became their Savior. In all their affliction he was afflicted... In his love and in his pity he redeemed them. He bore them, and carried them all the days of old. But they rebelled and grieved his Holy Spirit. The people remembered how God led Moses and the people through the sea and gave them rest. They prayed, Look down from heaven. They confessed, For you are our Father... You, Yahweh, are our Father. Our Redeemer from everlasting is your name.

Chapter 64Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 64: The Potter and the Clay

The people prayed, Oh that you would tear the heavens, that you would come down. They remembered when God did awesome things which we didn't look for. No one has seen a God besides you, who works for him who waits for him. They confessed, all our righteousness is like a polluted garment. We all fade like a leaf. Then they turned to God: But now, Yahweh, you are our Father. We are the clay and you our potter. We all are the work of your hand. They asked God not to remember their sin forever, for we are all your people. Their holy cities and the temple had been laid waste, and they asked whether God would keep silent.

Chapter 65Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 65: New Heavens and a New Earth

God said, I am found by those who didn't seek me. He had spread out my hands all day to a rebellious people. God would judge those who rejected him, but he would keep his servants, as a farmer keeps a good cluster of grapes because a blessing is in it. Behold, my servants will sing for joy of heart. Then God said, For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; and the former things will not be remembered. There would be no more weeping. People would live long. They will build houses and inhabit them. They will plant vineyards and eat their fruit. Before they call, I will answer. The wolf and the lamb will feed together. They will not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain.

Chapter 66Preschool–Grade 5

Isaiah 66: As a Mother Comforts

Yahweh said, Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. No house could hold him, but I will look to this man, even to he who is poor and of a contrite spirit, and who trembles at my word. Those who chose their own ways would be judged. God promised that Zion would give birth to a nation in a day. Rejoice with Jerusalem, and be glad for her, all you who love her. God said, Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river. As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you. God would gather all nations and languages, and they will come, and will see my glory. Messengers would declare my glory among the nations. The new heavens and new earth would remain, and all flesh will come to worship before me.
