Ephesians 5 continues Paul's teaching on the new life. Be therefore imitators of God, as beloved children. Walk in love, even as Christ also loved us and gave himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling fragrance. Paul says impurity and greed should not even be named among God's holy people, nor foolish talking and jesting, but rather giving of thanks. Let no one deceive you with empty words.
Paul draws a sharp contrast. For you were once darkness, but are now light in the Lord. Walk as children of light, for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth. Believers should test what pleases the Lord. Paul quotes a call to wake up: Awake, you who sleep, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.
Wise living means redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Don't be drunken with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit. A Spirit-filled church sings, gives thanks always, and practices subjecting yourselves to one another in the fear of Christ. Paul then addresses marriage. Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the assembly and gave himself up for her. Paul says this is a great mystery, and he speaks concerning Christ and the assembly.
