Imitators of God

Read the Story

Paul said, Be therefore imitators of God, as beloved children. An imitator is someone who copies. Children often copy their parents. We should copy God's love. Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us.

Paul warned them to stay away from sin and silly, unkind talk. Instead they should give thanks. He said, You were once darkness, but are now light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.

Be wise with your time. Be filled with the Spirit. Sing psalms, hymns, and songs to God. Give thanks always for all things. Paul also said that families should love and honor one another.

Ephesians 5 · Grade 4

Walk as Children of Light

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul begins, Be therefore imitators of God, as beloved children. Just as children copy a loving father, believers should copy God. Walk in love, even as Christ also loved us and gave himself up for us. Paul tells them to turn away from impurity, greed, and foolish talking. Instead, there should be giving of thanks.

Paul uses a picture of light and darkness. For you were once darkness, but are now light in the Lord. Walk as children of light. Light shows what is good and right and true. Believers should not join in deeds of darkness but should bring them into the light.

Therefore watch carefully how you walk, not as unwise, but as wise. Paul warns against being drunk with wine and tells them to be filled with the Spirit instead. Believers sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs and give thanks always. Paul then speaks to wives and husbands, after telling all believers to be subjecting yourselves to one another in the fear of Christ. Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. He tells husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the assembly and gave himself up for her.

Ephesians 5 · Grade 5

Christ Loved Us and Gave Himself Up for Us

Name Date

Read and Think

Ephesians 5 continues Paul's teaching on the new life. Be therefore imitators of God, as beloved children. Walk in love, even as Christ also loved us and gave himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling fragrance. Paul says impurity and greed should not even be named among God's holy people, nor foolish talking and jesting, but rather giving of thanks. Let no one deceive you with empty words.

Paul draws a sharp contrast. For you were once darkness, but are now light in the Lord. Walk as children of light, for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth. Believers should test what pleases the Lord. Paul quotes a call to wake up: Awake, you who sleep, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.

Wise living means redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Don't be drunken with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit. A Spirit-filled church sings, gives thanks always, and practices subjecting yourselves to one another in the fear of Christ. Paul then addresses marriage. Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the assembly and gave himself up for her. Paul says this is a great mystery, and he speaks concerning Christ and the assembly.

Show What You Know

  1. What did Christ's self-giving become to God?

  2. Where is the fruit of the Spirit found?

  3. What does Paul call believers to wake up to?

  4. What does redeeming the time mean here?

  5. What does Paul say marriage points to?
