The letter opens: Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, to the assembly of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. They always give thanks to God for the believers, remembering them without ceasing in prayer. They recall the believers' work of faith, labor of love, and perseverance of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.
The writers know that God has chosen these believers, because the Good News came to them not in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit. The Thessalonians became imitators of Paul and of the Lord. They received the word in much affliction, yet with joy of the Holy Spirit.
As a result, they became an example to all who believe in Macedonia and Achaia. The word of the Lord sounded out from them, and their faith toward God became known in every place. Others reported how they turned to God from idols, to serve a living and true God. Now they wait for His Son to come from heaven. God raised Him from the dead. Jesus, Paul says, delivers us from the wrath to come.
