Read the Story

The letter opens with three names: Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy. They wrote to the church of the Thessalonians. They always thanked God for these believers in their prayers.

They remembered the believers' faith. They remembered their love. They remembered their hope in Jesus. The good news came to them with power and the Holy Spirit. They had trouble, but they still had joy.

These believers became an example to others far away. The word of the Lord spread from them to many places. People told how they left idols to serve the real God who lives. They waited for Jesus, God's Son, to come from heaven.

The first verse names Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy as the writers. They write to the assembly of the Thessalonians. They give thanks to God for all of them and remember them in prayer.

They remember three things: the believers' work of faith, labor of love, and patient hope in the Lord Jesus Christ. The Good News did not come in word only. The Holy Spirit worked with power. Though the believers faced much trouble, they received the word with joy from the Holy Spirit.

The believers became an example to all who believe in Macedonia and Achaia. The word of the Lord went out from them, and their faith became known everywhere. People reported that they had left idols behind to serve the true and living God. They also wait for Jesus to come from heaven. God raised Him from the dead.

Turned From Idols

Name Date

Read and Think

The letter opens: Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, to the assembly of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. They always give thanks to God for the believers, remembering them without ceasing in prayer. They recall the believers' work of faith, labor of love, and perseverance of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.

The writers know that God has chosen these believers, because the Good News came to them not in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit. The Thessalonians became imitators of Paul and of the Lord. They received the word in much affliction, yet with joy of the Holy Spirit.

As a result, they became an example to all who believe in Macedonia and Achaia. The word of the Lord sounded out from them, and their faith toward God became known in every place. Others reported how they turned to God from idols, to serve a living and true God. Now they wait for His Son to come from heaven. God raised Him from the dead. Jesus, Paul says, delivers us from the wrath to come.
