Chapter 1Preschool–Grade 5

1 Thessalonians 1: An Example to All

1 Thessalonians 1 opens with the names Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, writing to the assembly of the Thessalonians. They thank God for the believers' work of faith, labor of love, and steady hope in Jesus. The Good News came to them with power and the Holy Spirit. Even in trouble they received the word with joy and became an example to believers everywhere. People told how they left idols behind to serve the true God, and now they waited for His Son to come from heaven.

Chapter 2Preschool–Grade 5

1 Thessalonians 2: Gentle Like a Mother

1 Thessalonians 2 describes how Paul and his friends shared the Good News in Thessalonica. Though they had suffered at Philippi, they were bold in God. They did not try to please people or use flattery, but spoke to please God. They were gentle, like a nursing mother caring for her children. They worked night and day so as not to be a burden, and they encouraged everyone as a father does his children. The Thessalonians received the message as the word of God. Paul longed to see them, for they were his glory and joy.

Chapter 3Preschool–Grade 5

1 Thessalonians 3: Standing Firm

1 Thessalonians 3 tells how Paul, unable to wait any longer, sent Timothy from Athens to strengthen and comfort the believers so that no one would be shaken by their troubles. Timothy came back with glad news of their faith and love, and Paul was comforted. Paul thanks God with great joy and prays night and day to see them again. He prays that the Lord will make them increase and abound in love toward one another and toward all, and make their hearts holy and without blame.

Chapter 4Preschool–Grade 5

1 Thessalonians 4: Comfort One Another

1 Thessalonians 4 urges believers to live in a way that pleases God. God's will is that they be holy and live pure lives. They are taught by God to love one another and should do so more and more. They should lead quiet lives and work with their own hands. Paul then gives hope about believers who have died: since Jesus died and rose again, God will bring them to be with Jesus. Jesus will come back from heaven, and so we will be with the Lord forever. Paul says: Therefore comfort one another with these words.

Chapter 5Preschool–Grade 5

1 Thessalonians 5: Children of Light

1 Thessalonians 5 reminds believers that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night, but they belong to the light, not the night. So they should be alert and self-controlled, putting on faith, love, and the hope of salvation like armor. God did not appoint them to wrath but to salvation through Jesus. Paul gives many short commands: encourage one another, be at peace, Always rejoice. Pray without ceasing. In everything give thanks. He prays that the God of peace will make them holy, for he who calls you is faithful.
