Grafted In

Read the Story

Paul asks, did God reject his people? He answers, "May it never be!" Paul himself was an Israelite. God always keeps some people faithful by his grace.

Paul says God's family is like an olive tree. Some branches from a wild olive tree were joined in. Now they share the tree's root.

Paul says these new branches should not boast. The root holds them up. God can join the first branches back in too.

"For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable." God has mercy on all. Paul praises God. "Oh the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and the knowledge of God!"

Memory Verse

“For of him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory for ever! Amen.”

The Gifts and Calling of God

Name Date

Read and Think

"I ask then, did God reject his people? May it never be! For I also am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin." "God didn't reject his people, whom he foreknew."

In Elijah's time, God kept seven thousand people faithful to him. "Even so too at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace." Paul says if it is by grace, it is no longer of works.

Paul uses the picture of an olive tree. Branches of a wild olive were grafted in and share in the root. They must not boast, because "it is not you who support the root, but the root supports you." God is able to graft the natural branches in again.

"For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable." "For God has bound all to disobedience, that he might have mercy on all." "Oh the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and the knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past tracing out!"

Show What You Know

  2. What is there at this present time?

  3. What supports the grafted branches?

  4. What are irrevocable?

Think About It

  1. Paul warns the grafted branches not to boast. How can you stay humble about what God has given you?

  2. God's ways are past tracing out. When is it hard for you to trust God's wisdom, and how can you praise him anyway?

Memory Verse

“Oh the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and the knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past tracing out!”

To Him Be the Glory

Name Date

Read and Think

"I ask then, did God reject his people? May it never be! For I also am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin." "God didn't reject his people, whom he foreknew." Elijah thought he alone was left, but God had reserved for himself seven thousand. "Even so too at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace." If it is by grace, it is no longer of works; otherwise grace is no longer grace.

Paul asks, "did they stumble that they might fall? May it never be!" Through this, salvation has come to the Gentiles. Paul magnifies his ministry, hoping that some of his own people may be saved. If the root is holy, so are the branches.

If some branches were broken off, and a wild olive was grafted in among them to share in the root and richness of the olive tree, it must not boast over the branches. "But if you boast, remember that it is not you who support the root, but the root supports you." Paul warns them not to be conceited, but to fear. He points to the goodness and severity of God. God is able to graft the natural branches in again.

Paul does not want believers to be wise in their own conceits. A partial hardening has come until the fullness of the Gentiles comes in, "and so all Israel will be saved." "For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable." "For God has bound all to disobedience, that he might have mercy on all." "Oh the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and the knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past tracing out!" "For of him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory for ever! Amen."

Show What You Know

  1. How many did God reserve for himself in Elijah's time?

  2. What has come to the Gentiles?

  3. What does Paul remind the grafted branches?

  4. Why has God bound all to disobedience?

  2. The gifts and calling of God are irrevocable. How does God's faithfulness to his promises give you confidence?
