Romans 1: Not Ashamed of the Good News

Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ called to be an apostle, writes to all in Rome who are beloved of God. He thanks God that their faith is proclaimed throughout the whole world and says he prays for them always, longing to visit so they may encourage one another. He is not ashamed of the Good News, for it is the power of God for salvation for everyone who believes. God's power and divinity are clearly seen in the things he made, yet people did not glorify him or give thanks, but exchanged the truth of God for a lie and worshiped created things rather than the Creator.

Romans 2: God Shows No Favorites

Paul warns that those who judge others while doing the same things condemn themselves. God's goodness, forbearance, and patience are meant to lead people to repentance. God will give to each according to their works, eternal life to those who seek glory and honor by patient well-doing, for there is no partiality with God. Those who have the law should keep it, and Gentiles show the work of the law written in their hearts. Being God's people is a matter of the heart, in the spirit and not the letter, with praise that comes from God.

Romans 3: Made Right by Faith

Paul says the Jewish people were entrusted with the revelations of God, and God remains true even when people are not. Yet all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin; as it is written, there is no one righteous. Through the law comes the knowledge of sin. But now a righteousness of God has been revealed apart from the law, through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. So a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law, and faith establishes the law.

Chapter 4Preschool–Grade 5

Romans 4: Abraham Believed God

Paul asks what Abraham found, and answers from Scripture: Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. His faith was counted as righteousness before he received the sign of circumcision, so that he might be the father of all who believe. The promise that he would be heir of the world came through the righteousness of faith, not through the law, so that it rests on grace. Though Abraham was about a hundred years old, he did not waver through unbelief, but grew strong through faith, giving glory to God, fully assured that God could do what he promised. This was written for our sake also, who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead.

Chapter 5Preschool–Grade 5

Romans 5: Peace with God

Being justified by faith, believers have peace with God through the Lord Jesus Christ and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. They even rejoice in sufferings, because suffering produces perseverance, perseverance proven character, and proven character hope, and hope does not disappoint, because God's love has been poured into their hearts through the Holy Spirit. God commends his own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. As sin and death entered the world through one man, so through the obedience of one, Jesus Christ, the free gift of grace abounds, and where sin abounded, grace abounded more exceedingly.

Chapter 6Preschool–Grade 5

Romans 6: Alive to God

Paul asks whether believers should continue in sin so that grace may abound, and answers, May it never be! Those baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death and raised to walk in newness of life. Christ, being raised from the dead, dies no more, so believers should consider themselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. They are not to let sin reign but to present themselves to God as instruments of righteousness, for sin will not have dominion over them, because they are under grace. The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Chapter 7Preschool–Grade 5

Romans 7: The Law Is Holy

Paul explains that a law has authority over a person only while that person lives, and uses marriage as an example: believers have died to the law through the body of Christ so that they might belong to him who was raised from the dead and bear fruit to God. The law is not sin; through the commandment You shall not covet Paul came to know sin. The law is holy, and the commandment holy, righteous, and good. Paul describes a struggle: he does not practice what he desires, but what he hates he does. He delights in God's law, yet sees another law at war within him, and cries out, Who will deliver me? He answers, I thank God through Jesus Christ, our Lord!

Chapter 8Preschool–Grade 5

Romans 8: More Than Conquerors

There is now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, for the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made them free from the law of sin and of death. Those who walk according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit, which is life and peace. All who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God, crying, Abba! Father! The sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory to be revealed, and all creation waits eagerly. The Spirit helps our weaknesses and intercedes for us. All things work together for good for those who love God. If God is for us, who can be against us? In all things we are more than conquerors, and nothing can separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Chapter 9Preschool–Grade 5

Romans 9: God Who Has Mercy

Paul tells the truth in Christ that he has great sorrow in his heart for his relatives according to the flesh, the Israelites, to whom belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the service, and the promises, and from whom is Christ as concerning the flesh. The word of God has not failed: the children of the promise are counted as offspring, as with Isaac and with Jacob. God said to Moses that he will have mercy on whom he has mercy, so it is not of him who wills, nor of him who runs, but of God who has mercy. Paul uses the picture of a potter and clay, and points to Hosea, where God calls those who were not his people his people. Righteousness comes by faith, and whoever believes in him will not be disappointed.

Chapter 10Preschool–Grade 5

Romans 10: Faith Comes by Hearing

Paul's heart's desire and prayer to God is for Israel, that they may be saved. Christ is the fulfillment of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. The word of faith is near: if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. There is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord is Lord of all, and whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved. But how will they call on him in whom they have not believed, or hear without a preacher, or preach unless they are sent? How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the Good News of peace! So faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Chapter 11Preschool–Grade 5

Romans 11: The Depth of the Riches

Paul asks, did God reject his people? May it never be! Paul himself is an Israelite, and as in the days of Elijah, there is a remnant according to the election of grace. Paul uses the picture of an olive tree: Gentile believers, like a wild olive, have been grafted in and share in the root, so they must not boast, for the root supports them. God is able to graft the natural branches in again, and so all Israel will be saved, for the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. God has bound all to disobedience that he might have mercy on all. Paul ends in praise: Oh the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and the knowledge of God! For of him and through him and to him are all things.

Chapter 12Preschool–Grade 5

Romans 12: A Living Sacrifice

By the mercies of God, Paul urges believers to present their bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, and not to be conformed to this world but transformed by the renewing of their minds. As one body in Christ with many members, they have different gifts according to the grace given: prophecy, service, teaching, exhorting, giving, leading, and showing mercy. Love must be without hypocrisy. They are to cling to what is good, love one another with brotherly affection, rejoice in hope, endure in troubles, continue in prayer, and practice hospitality. They should bless those who persecute them, rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep, and live at peace with all as much as it depends on them. They must not take revenge, but feed a hungry enemy. Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Chapter 13Preschool–Grade 5

Romans 13: Love Fulfills the Law

Paul tells every soul to be in subjection to the higher authorities, for there is no authority except from God. Rulers are God's servants for good, so believers should do what is good, and they pay taxes and give respect and honor to whom they are due. Owe no one anything, except to love one another, for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. The commandments are all summed up in this saying: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. Love does not harm a neighbor, so love is the fulfillment of the law. Paul says the night is far gone and the day is near, so believers should throw off the deeds of darkness, put on the armor of light, walk properly, and put on the Lord Jesus Christ.

Chapter 14Preschool–Grade 5

Romans 14: Build One Another Up

Paul tells believers to accept one who is weak in faith, but not for disputes over opinions. One person believes he may eat all things, while another eats only vegetables; one esteems one day above another, while another esteems every day alike. Each should be fully assured in his own mind, and neither should judge or despise the other, for God has accepted him. None of us lives to himself: whether we live or die, we are the Lord's, and each one will give account of himself to God. So believers should not put a stumbling block in a brother's way, but walk in love, for God's Kingdom is not eating and drinking, but righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. They should follow after things which make for peace and build one another up.

Chapter 15Preschool–Grade 5

Romans 15: The God of Hope

Those who are strong ought to bear the weaknesses of the weak and not please themselves, for even Christ did not please himself. Whatever was written before was written for our learning, that through perseverance and encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. Paul prays that God would give believers the same mind with one another, so that with one voice they may glorify God. They are to accept one another, as Christ accepted them, to the glory of God, and the Gentiles also glorify God for his mercy. Paul prays that the God of hope will fill them with all joy and peace in believing. He describes his work as a servant of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles, making it his aim to preach the Good News where Christ was not already named. He plans to go to Jerusalem with a contribution for the poor among the saints, then to visit Rome on his way to Spain, and asks them to strive together with him in prayer.

Chapter 16Preschool–Grade 5

Romans 16: Greetings in the Lord

Paul commends Phoebe, a servant of the assembly at Cenchreae, and asks the believers to receive her in the Lord. He greets many fellow workers, including Prisca and Aquila, who risked their own necks for his life, along with the assembly that meets in their house, and many others by name. He urges them to look out for those who cause divisions contrary to the doctrine they learned and to turn away from them. He wants them wise in that which is good and innocent in that which is evil, and says the God of peace will quickly crush Satan under their feet. Timothy and others send greetings. Tertius, who wrote the letter, greets them in the Lord. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ is with them.
