Romans 11 · Grade 4
The Gifts and Calling of God
Read and Think
"I ask then, did God reject his people? May it never be! For I also am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin." "God didn't reject his people, whom he foreknew."
In Elijah's time, God kept seven thousand people faithful to him. "Even so too at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace." Paul says if it is by grace, it is no longer of works.
Paul uses the picture of an olive tree. Branches of a wild olive were grafted in and share in the root. They must not boast, because "it is not you who support the root, but the root supports you." God is able to graft the natural branches in again.
"For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable." "For God has bound all to disobedience, that he might have mercy on all." "Oh the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and the knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past tracing out!"

What tribe was Paul from?
What is there at this present time?
What supports the grafted branches?
What are irrevocable?
Think About It
Paul warns the grafted branches not to boast. How can you stay humble about what God has given you?
God's ways are past tracing out. When is it hard for you to trust God's wisdom, and how can you praise him anyway?
Memory Verse
“Oh the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and the knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past tracing out!”

- What does it mean to be humble instead of proud?
- Why does Paul praise God at the end?
