David's Vow and God's Oath

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 132 is titled A Song of Ascents and names no author. It recalls the day David brought the ark of the covenant to Jerusalem. The psalm begins, Yahweh, remember David and all his affliction, how he swore to Yahweh. David vowed not to rest until he found out a place for Yahweh, a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob.

The people's response follows: We will go into his dwelling place. We will worship at his footstool. The ark was thought of as God's footstool on earth. They pray, Arise, Yahweh, into your resting place, you, and the ark of your strength. Let your priests be clothed with righteousness.

The second half turns from David's vow to God's oath. Yahweh has sworn to David in truth. He will not turn from it: I will set the fruit of your body on your throne. God has chosen Zion: This is my resting place forever. He promises bread for the poor, salvation for the priests, and a lamp for his anointed. The crown on David's heir will shine.

The Promise to David's Line

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 132 is titled A Song of Ascents and names no author. It is the longest of the Songs of Ascents and is built on two oaths. The first is David's: he swore he would not enter his house, go up into his bed, or give sleep to his eyes until I find out a place for Yahweh. The psalm remembers David's zeal to bring the ark to Jerusalem (2 Samuel 6).

The people relive that journey. They heard of the ark in Ephrathah and found it in the field of Jaar. We will go into his dwelling place. We will worship at his footstool. Their prayer, Arise, Yahweh, into your resting place, echoes the words Moses spoke when the ark set out in the wilderness. They ask for priests clothed with righteousness and saints who shout for joy.

The second oath is God's, and it is greater. Yahweh has sworn to David in truth. He will not turn from it: I will set the fruit of your body on your throne. He chose Zion as his resting place forever and promised to make the horn of David to bud there and to ordain a lamp for his anointed. In the New Testament, the angel tells Mary that God will give her son the throne of his father David (Luke 1:32).

Show What You Know

  1. What two oaths shape the psalm?

  2. Whose words does Arise, Yahweh echo?

  3. What does the horn of David budding picture?

  4. How does Luke 1:32 connect to Psalm 132?

Crossword

  1. I will also clothe her ____ with salvation.
  2. Yahweh has sworn to ____ in truth.
  3. This is my ____ place forever.

Down

  1. I will satisfy her poor with ____.
  2. For Yahweh has chosen ____.

Think About It

  1. God's oath was greater than David's vow. Why is it good news that our hope rests on God's promise more than ours?

  2. David was zealous for God's presence. What would it look like to be zealous for God this week?

Memory Verse

Yahweh has sworn to David in truth. He will not turn from it: “I will set the fruit of your body on your throne.
