The Promise to David's Line

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 132 is titled A Song of Ascents and names no author. It is the longest of the Songs of Ascents and is built on two oaths. The first is David's: he swore he would not enter his house, go up into his bed, or give sleep to his eyes until I find out a place for Yahweh. The psalm remembers David's zeal to bring the ark to Jerusalem (2 Samuel 6).

The people relive that journey. They heard of the ark in Ephrathah and found it in the field of Jaar. We will go into his dwelling place. We will worship at his footstool. Their prayer, Arise, Yahweh, into your resting place, echoes the words Moses spoke when the ark set out in the wilderness. They ask for priests clothed with righteousness and saints who shout for joy.

The second oath is God's, and it is greater. Yahweh has sworn to David in truth. He will not turn from it: I will set the fruit of your body on your throne. He chose Zion as his resting place forever and promised to make the horn of David to bud there and to ordain a lamp for his anointed. In the New Testament, the angel tells Mary that God will give her son the throne of his father David (Luke 1:32).

For families: talk about these together.

  • God kept His promise to David for many years. How does God's faithfulness to old promises steady you?
  • The priests would be clothed with salvation and the saints would shout for joy. How might God be inviting you to worship with greater joy?
  • What is one way you could live out this chapter this week?
