Waiting for Mercy

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 123 is titled A Song of Ascents and names no author. It is only four verses long. It begins with one person: I lift up my eyes to you, you who sit in the heavens. Then it becomes the prayer of the whole people.

The central picture comes from a household. Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to Yahweh, our God, until he has mercy on us. A servant watched the master's hand for direction, provision, and help. God's people watch him the same way.

Their need is mercy. Have mercy on us, Yahweh, have mercy on us, for we have endured much contempt. Proud people at ease have scoffed at them. They do not fight back with scorn; they look up and wait for God to act.

Show What You Know

  1. How does the prayer change after verse 1?

  2. Why did servants watch their master's hand?

  3. What do the people ask God for twice?

  4. How do they respond to the scoffing?

The Watching Eyes of Faith

Name Date

Read and Think

Psalm 123 is titled A Song of Ascents and names no author. In four verses it moves from I to our. I lift up my eyes to you, you who sit in the heavens. God's throne in the heavens means he rules over every situation below.

The psalm's main picture is a household servant. As the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to Yahweh, our God, until he has mercy on us. Servants watched for a gesture that told them what to do or that offered help. The picture shows dependence and attentive waiting rather than demanding.

The final verses explain the need: they have endured much contempt and are exceedingly filled with the scoffing of those who are at ease, with the contempt of the proud. The comfortable and proud look down on God's people. The response is not revenge but a repeated plea, Have mercy on us, Yahweh, have mercy on us. In the New Testament, Hebrews urges believers to look to Jesus, who endured scorn (Hebrews 12:2).

Show What You Know

  1. Where does the singer lift up his eyes?

  2. What does God's throne in the heavens show?

  3. What attitude does the servant picture show?

  4. Which New Testament verse urges believers to look to Jesus?
