Micah 7 · Grade 4

A God Who Pardons

Name Date

Read and Think

Micah begins with sorrow. He is like someone who comes to the vineyard after harvest and finds no grapes to eat. The godly man has perished out of the earth, he says. Leaders ask for bribes, and even neighbors and family members cannot trust one another.

Then comes a turning point. Micah says, but as for me, I will look to Yahweh. I will wait for the God of my salvation. My God will hear me. Micah tells his enemy not to rejoice and says, when I fall, I will arise. When I sit in darkness, Yahweh will be a light to me. He admits he has sinned, yet he trusts God to bring him out to the light.

Micah prays for God to shepherd his people with his staff, as in the days of old. God promises to show them marvelous things, as when they came out of Egypt. The book ends with praise: who is a God like you, who pardons iniquity? He doesn't keep his anger forever, because he delights in loving kindness. He will tread our iniquities under foot and cast all our sins into the depths of the sea.

Micah 7 · Grade 5

Who Is a God Like You?

Name Date

Read and Think

The last chapter of Micah begins in grief. The prophet compares himself to someone gleaning a vineyard after harvest and finding no cluster of grapes. The godly man has perished out of the earth. Rulers and judges ask for bribes, and trust has broken down even inside households.

In verse 7 Micah turns everything around and says, but as for me, I will look to Yahweh. I will wait for the God of my salvation. My God will hear me. He tells the enemy not to gloat, saying, when I fall, I will arise. When I sit in darkness, Yahweh will be a light to me. He accepts God's discipline because he has sinned against him, yet he is confident God will plead his case and bring him out to the light.

Micah then prays like a shepherd's song: shepherd your people with your staff, the flock of your heritage. God answers with a promise of marvelous things, as in the days of the exodus from Egypt. The book closes with praise: who is a God like you, who pardons iniquity and passes over the disobedience of the remnant of his heritage? He doesn't retain his anger forever, because he delights in loving kindness. He will tread our iniquities under foot and cast all our sins into the depths of the sea, keeping the truth and mercy he swore to Abraham and Jacob.

  2. How does verse 7 change the direction of the chapter?
