Micah 7 · Grade 5

Who Is a God Like You?

Read and Think

The last chapter of Micah begins in grief. The prophet compares himself to someone gleaning a vineyard after harvest and finding no cluster of grapes. The godly man has perished out of the earth. Rulers and judges ask for bribes, and trust has broken down even inside households.

In verse 7 Micah turns everything around and says, but as for me, I will look to Yahweh. I will wait for the God of my salvation. My God will hear me. He tells the enemy not to gloat, saying, when I fall, I will arise. When I sit in darkness, Yahweh will be a light to me. He accepts God's discipline because he has sinned against him, yet he is confident God will plead his case and bring him out to the light.

Micah then prays like a shepherd's song: shepherd your people with your staff, the flock of your heritage. God answers with a promise of marvelous things, as in the days of the exodus from Egypt. The book closes with praise: who is a God like you, who pardons iniquity and passes over the disobedience of the remnant of his heritage? He doesn't retain his anger forever, because he delights in loving kindness. He will tread our iniquities under foot and cast all our sins into the depths of the sea, keeping the truth and mercy he swore to Abraham and Jacob.
