Luke 7 shows Jesus caring for people from many backgrounds. The first is a Roman centurion, a Gentile officer. He humbly said he was not worthy to have Jesus under his roof. As a soldier, he knew how commands work. So he trusted that Jesus' word alone could heal. Jesus marveled and said He had not found such faith even in Israel. Faith is not about who you are, but about trusting who Jesus is.
Next, Jesus met a funeral at Nain. A widow had lost her only son, and with him her protection and support. No one asked Jesus for help, but He had compassion. He touched the stretcher and said, Young man, I tell you, arise. The young man sat up, and Jesus gave him to his mother. When John the Baptist sent questions from prison, Jesus pointed to these works as signs that He was the promised One.
At Simon the Pharisee's house, a woman known for her sins wept at Jesus' feet and anointed them. Simon thought a true prophet would send her away. Jesus told a story about two debtors. One owed much and one owed little, and both were forgiven. The one forgiven much loved much. Jesus said her sins were forgiven, and her faith had saved her.
