Just Say the Word

Name Date

Read the Story

A Roman centurion in Capernaum had a servant who was close to death. The centurion loved the Jewish people and had built them a synagogue. He sent a message to Jesus. He said he was not worthy to have Jesus come to his house. If Jesus would just say the word, his servant would be healed. Jesus was amazed. He said He had not found such great faith even in Israel.

In the town of Nain, Jesus met a funeral. A widow's only son had died. Jesus had compassion on her and told her not to cry. He touched the stretcher and told the young man to get up. He sat up and began to speak!

Later, at a Pharisee's house, a woman known as a sinner washed Jesus' feet with her tears and poured perfume on them. Jesus said that her many sins were forgiven, so she loved much.

Memory Verse

When Jesus heard these things, he marveled at him, and turned and said to the multitude who followed him, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith, no, not in Israel.”

Faith That Amazed Jesus

Name Date

Read and Think

A Roman centurion was a soldier in charge of a hundred men. One in Capernaum had a servant he cared about who was dying. Jewish elders begged Jesus to help, saying the man loved their nation. But the centurion sent friends to say he was not worthy for Jesus to enter his home. He understood authority. He knew Jesus could simply give a command and it would be done. Jesus turned to the crowd and praised his great faith. The servant was healed.

In Nain, Jesus met a widow walking behind the body of her only son. Jesus had compassion on her. He touched the stretcher and raised the young man to life. The people said God had visited His people.

At a Pharisee's dinner, a sinful woman wept at Jesus' feet, wiped them with her hair, and anointed them with perfume. The Pharisee judged her. Luke 7 · Grade 5

Compassion and Forgiveness

Name Date

Read and Think

Luke 7 shows Jesus caring for people from many backgrounds. The first is a Roman centurion, a Gentile officer. He humbly said he was not worthy to have Jesus under his roof. As a soldier, he knew how commands work. So he trusted that Jesus' word alone could heal. Jesus marveled and said He had not found such faith even in Israel. Faith is not about who you are, but about trusting who Jesus is.

Next, Jesus met a funeral at Nain. A widow had lost her only son, and with him her protection and support. No one asked Jesus for help, but He had compassion. He touched the stretcher and said, Young man, I tell you, arise. The young man sat up, and Jesus gave him to his mother. When John the Baptist sent questions from prison, Jesus pointed to these works as signs that He was the promised One.

At Simon the Pharisee's house, a woman known for her sins wept at Jesus' feet and anointed them. Simon thought a true prophet would send her away. Jesus told a story about two debtors. One owed much and one owed little, and both were forgiven. The one forgiven much loved much. Jesus said her sins were forgiven, and her faith had saved her.

Show What You Know

  1. Why was the centurion's faith remarkable?

  2. Why was the widow's situation so serious?

  3. What did Jesus point John's messengers to?

  4. What did Simon think about the woman?

  5. What is the main lesson of the two debtors story?
