Renew Our Days

Name Date

Read the Story

The last chapter of Lamentations is a prayer. The people asked Yahweh to remember what had happened to them. Strangers lived in their homes. They had to pay for water and wood. Their joy had turned into sadness.

They told God honestly that they had sinned. The crown has fallen from our head. Woe to us, for we have sinned!

Then they looked up. You, Yahweh, remain forever. Your throne is from generation to generation. Kings and cities can fall, but God's throne never does. So they prayed: Turn us to yourself, Yahweh, and we will be turned. Renew our days as of old.

Memory Verse

“Turn us to yourself, Yahweh, and we will be turned. Renew our days as of old.”

Lamentations 5 · Grade 4

Turn Us to Yourself

Name Date

Read and Think

Lamentations 5 is different from the first four chapters. It has twenty-two verses, like the number of Hebrew letters, but it is not an acrostic. It is a community prayer. Remember, Yahweh, what has come on us. Look, and see our reproach.

The people list their losses: their inheritance had gone to strangers, they had become like orphans, and they had to pay even for water and wood. Joy and music had stopped. They confess both their fathers' sins and their own. The crown has fallen from our head. Woe to us, for we have sinned!

In verse 19 the prayer lifts its eyes to God's eternal rule. You, Yahweh, remain forever. Your throne is from generation to generation. Because God's throne stands, the people can ask him to restore them. Turn us to yourself, Yahweh, and we will be turned. Renew our days as of old. They know that only God can turn their hearts.

  1. How many verses does chapter 5 have?

  2. Is chapter 5 an acrostic?

  3. What did the people have to pay for?

  4. What does verse 19 say about God's throne?

  2. How can God's eternal rule give hope when everything else seems lost?

Lamentations 5 · Grade 5

An Unfinished Prayer

Name Date

Read and Think

The final chapter is a communal prayer in twenty-two lines, matching the alphabet's length but not its order, as if the structure itself were breaking down. Remember, Yahweh, what has come on us. Look, and see our reproach. The community lists its losses under foreign rule: land given to strangers, families broken, hard labor, and joy turned to mourning.

The confession is double. Our fathers sinned, and are no more. We have borne their iniquities. Yet a few verses later they admit their own guilt as well. The crown has fallen from our head. Woe to us, for we have sinned! Lament does not shift blame; it tells the whole truth.

The turning point is verse 19. You, Yahweh, remain forever. Your throne is from generation to generation. Because God still reigns, the people dare to ask for help. Turn us to yourself, Yahweh, and we will be turned. Renew our days as of old. The book ends with an honest, unresolved question about whether God has rejected them. In Jewish practice, verse 21 is often repeated after verse 22 when reading aloud, so the reading ends on hope. Christians see the answer in God's later work of restoration and in the new covenant Jeremiah promised.

Show What You Know

  1. How does the structure of chapter 5 differ from the earlier acrostics?

  2. What two kinds of sin are confessed?

  3. Which verse is the turning point?

  4. In Jewish practice, what is often done with verse 21 when reading aloud?
