Chapter 1Preschool–Grade 5

Lamentations 1: The Lonely City

Lamentations 1 is a sad poem about Jerusalem after the city was taken by Babylon. The city once was full of people, but now it sits alone like a widow. Her people have gone into captivity, and no one comforts her. The poem says honestly that Jerusalem had sinned against God. In the middle of her tears, the city still turns and speaks to Yahweh, saying that he is righteous and asking him to look and see her sorrow.

Lamentations 2: Tears Like a River

Lamentations 2 is another sad poem. It says that God himself had brought judgment on Jerusalem, just as he had warned long before. The walls, the palaces, and even the temple were thrown down. The false prophets had told the people only nice things instead of showing them their sin. The poet weeps until his eyes fail. Then he calls the city to cry out to the Lord in the night and pour out her heart like water before him.

Lamentations 3: New Every Morning

Lamentations 3 is the heart of the book. One man describes how he has suffered and felt like he was walking in darkness. But in the middle of his sadness, he remembers something that gives him hope: because of Yahweh's loving kindness, his people are not consumed. God's mercies are new every morning, and his faithfulness is great. The man decides to wait quietly for God. He remembers that God came near when he called and told him not to be afraid.

Lamentations 4: Gold Grown Dim

Lamentations 4 is a sad poem comparing Jerusalem before and after its fall. The people of Zion had been precious like fine gold, but now they were treated like plain clay pots. The poem says the city fell because of the sins of its prophets and priests. The people had looked to other nations for help, but no nation could save them. At the end, there is a word of hope: the punishment of Zion is finished, and God will no longer carry her away into captivity.

Lamentations 5: Remember Us, Lord

Lamentations 5 is a prayer. The people ask Yahweh to remember what has happened to them and to look at their shame. They have lost their land and their homes. Their joy has turned into sadness, and they confess that they have sinned. Then they remember that Yahweh remains forever and his throne lasts from generation to generation. They ask God to turn them back to himself and make their days new again.
