Lamentations 5 · Grade 4
Turn Us to Yourself
Read and Think
Lamentations 5 is different from the first four chapters. It has twenty-two verses, like the number of Hebrew letters, but it is not an acrostic. It is a community prayer. Remember, Yahweh, what has come on us. Look, and see our reproach.
The people list their losses: their inheritance had gone to strangers, they had become like orphans, and they had to pay even for water and wood. Joy and music had stopped. They confess both their fathers' sins and their own. The crown has fallen from our head. Woe to us, for we have sinned!
In verse 19 the prayer lifts its eyes to God's eternal rule. You, Yahweh, remain forever. Your throne is from generation to generation. Because God's throne stands, the people can ask him to restore them. Turn us to yourself, Yahweh, and we will be turned. Renew our days as of old. They know that only God can turn their hearts.
