Jonah 4 · Grade 4

A Lesson from a Vine

Name Date

Read and Think

When God spared Nineveh, it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was angry. He prayed and said this was why he had fled to Tarshish. He knew Yahweh was a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness. Jonah was so upset that he felt he would rather die. Yahweh asked, is it right for you to be angry?

Jonah went out to the east side of the city and made a booth. He sat in its shade to see what would become of Nineveh. Yahweh God prepared a vine to grow over Jonah and shade his head, and Jonah was exceedingly glad because of the vine.

At dawn the next day, God prepared a worm, and it chewed the vine so that it withered. God sent a sultry east wind, and the sun beat on Jonah's head until he was faint. God asked if it was right for him to be angry about the vine. Then God explained: Jonah was concerned for a vine he did not plant. Shouldn't God be concerned for Nineveh, a great city with more than one hundred twenty thousand persons and many animals?

He prayed to Yahweh, and said, “Please, Yahweh, wasn’t this what I said when I was still in my own country? Therefore I hurried to flee to Tarshish, for I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, and you relent of doing harm.
