Yahweh told Jonah to go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it. Jonah ran the other way and got on a ship to Tarshish. Yahweh sent a great storm. The sailors cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah. Jonah told them to throw him into the sea, and the sea became calm. Yahweh prepared a huge fish to swallow Jonah.
Inside the fish, Jonah prayed to Yahweh. He remembered how the waters were all around him and weeds were wrapped around his head. When his soul fainted, he remembered Yahweh, and his prayer came to God. Jonah said salvation belongs to Yahweh. Then Yahweh spoke to the fish, and it put Jonah out on dry land.
Yahweh's word came to Jonah a second time. This time Jonah went to Nineveh. He cried out that in forty days Nineveh would be overthrown. The people believed God. Everyone, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth, even the king. They turned from their evil ways. God saw it, and he did not send the disaster.
Jonah was angry that God had mercy on Nineveh. He said he knew God was gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness. Jonah sat outside the city. God made a vine grow to shade him, then a worm made it wither. Jonah was upset about the vine. God asked Jonah if he should not be concerned for the great city of Nineveh.
