Jonah Learns About Mercy

Name Date

Read the Story

God did not bring the disaster on Nineveh. This made Jonah very angry. He prayed and said he knew God was gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and full of loving kindness. Yahweh asked him, is it right for you to be angry?

Jonah sat in the shade of a booth outside the city. God made a vine grow to shade him, and Jonah was glad.

At dawn God sent a worm, and the vine withered. Jonah was angry about the vine. God said Jonah cared about a vine he did not make grow. Should God not care for Nineveh, with all its people and many animals?

Memory Verse

He prayed to Yahweh, and said, “Please, Yahweh, wasn’t this what I said when I was still in my own country? Therefore I hurried to flee to Tarshish, for I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, and you relent of doing harm.
