Read and Think

Isaiah 66 gathers the book's great themes. Verses 1-2 relativize the temple: "Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool." In the New Testament, Stephen cites this in Acts 7:49-50 to show God is not confined to buildings. God's favor rests on the humble, echoing 57:15. Verses 3-6 condemn worship without obedience, recalling chapter 1, so the book opens and closes on true versus false worship.

Verses 7-14 picture Zion as a mother giving birth instantly, "Shall a nation be born at once?" The maternal imagery then shifts to God himself: "As one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you." This is one of several places where Isaiah uses motherly language for God (compare 42:14 and 49:15). Verses 15-17 announce judgment by fire on the rebellious.

Verses 18-23 fulfill the vision of 2:2-4: God gathers "all nations and languages." Survivors become missionaries to distant lands like Tarshish and Javan, and some from the nations even become "priests and Levites." In the New Testament, Paul's mission to the Gentiles (Romans 15:16) reflects this hope. The new heavens and earth "shall remain," and "all flesh will come to worship." The final verse is a sober warning about those who rebel, a picture Jesus used in the New Testament (Mark 9:48).
