Isaiah 20 · Grade 4

Don't Trust in Egypt

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 20 is dated to "the year that Tartan came to Ashdod." Sargon king of Assyria sent his commander to capture this city. Many small nations hoped Egypt and Ethiopia would save them from Assyria.

God gave Isaiah a hard assignment: "loosen the sackcloth from off your waist, and take your sandals from off your feet." Isaiah obeyed and walked barefoot for three years. This acted message was "a sign and a wonder concerning Egypt and concerning Ethiopia."

The meaning was clear: the king of Assyria would lead away the captives of Egypt and Ethiopia. Those who looked to Egypt would be "dismayed and confounded." The coastland people would cry, "Behold, this is our expectation." Trusting powerful nations instead of God would leave them with no escape.

Show What You Know

  1. Who sent Tartan to capture Ashdod?

  2. What did God tell Isaiah to remove?

  3. What was Isaiah's three-year walk a sign concerning?

  4. How would people who trusted Egypt feel?

Think About It

  1. Isaiah obeyed a strange and hard command for three years. What is something hard God is asking you to obey?

  2. People trusted Egypt instead of God. What do people today trust for safety, and why is God better?

“They will be dismayed and confounded, because of Ethiopia their expectation, and of Egypt their glory.”

Isaiah 20 · Grade 5

A Sign and a Wonder

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 20 is one of the few chapters in Isaiah with a historical date: "In the year that Tartan came to Ashdod, when Sargon the king of Assyria sent him." Assyrian records confirm that Sargon II put down a rebellion at Ashdod around 711 BC The rebels had hoped for help from Egypt, which was then ruled by an Ethiopian (Cushite) dynasty.

God commanded Isaiah to "loosen the sackcloth from off your waist, and take your sandals from off your feet," and Isaiah walked barefoot for three years. Prophets often acted out God's message, as Jeremiah wore a yoke (Jeremiah 27) and Ezekiel lay on his side (Ezekiel 4). Isaiah's obedience made him "a sign and a wonder," a living picture of captives being led away.

God explained that "the king of Assyria will lead away the captives of Egypt and the exiles of Ethiopia." Those who had made Egypt their hope would be "dismayed and confounded, because of Ethiopia their expectation, and of Egypt their glory." The closing question, "how will we escape?" points back to the theme of Isaiah 30-31: "Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help" (31:1). True safety is found in God alone.

  1. Around what year did Sargon II put down the rebellion at Ashdod?
