Angels Help Lot

Name Date

Read the Story

Lot lived in the city of Sodom. The people there did very bad things and did not love God. One evening, two angels came to the city.

The angels told Lot to hurry and take his family out, because God was going to judge the city for its sin. Lot was slow to go. So the angels took Lot, his wife and his two daughters by the hand and led them out, because God was kind to them.

The angels told them to run and not look back. God sent fire on the wicked cities. Lot's wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt. But God kept Lot and his daughters safe.

Escape from Sodom

Name Date

Read the Story

Two angels came to Sodom in the evening. Lot was sitting in the city gate, and he welcomed them into his house and made them a meal. But the men of Sodom were very wicked. They surrounded the house and wanted to do evil to the guests. The angels pulled Lot inside, shut the door, and struck the men at the door with blindness.

The angels told Lot that the Lord was about to destroy the city because of its great sin. Lot warned the men who were to marry his daughters, but they thought he was joking. At dawn Lot lingered, so the angels took Lot, his wife and his two daughters by the hand and brought them outside the city, for the Lord was merciful to him.

The angels told them to escape and not look back. As the sun rose, Lot reached the small town of Zoar. Then the Lord rained burning sulfur and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah. Lot's wife looked back and became a pillar of salt. The Bible says God remembered Abraham and sent Lot out of the destruction.

Memory Verse

Genesis 19 · Grade 4

Mercy in the Midst of Judgment

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 19 is a hard chapter, because it shows how wicked Sodom had become. When two angels came to the city, Lot welcomed them, but the men of the city gathered and tried to harm the guests. The angels protected Lot's household. The city's sin was so great that God's judgment could no longer wait.

Even then, God was patient and kind. The angels warned Lot to take his family and flee. Lot hesitated (19:16). So the angels took them by the hand and led them out, because the Lord was merciful. God rescued Lot because He remembered Abraham, whose prayers in Genesis 18 were not forgotten.

God sent fire on Sodom and Gomorrah. The angels had told them not to look behind them, but Lot's wife looked back and became a pillar of salt. In the New Testament, Jesus tells us to remember Lot's wife (Luke 17:32), warning us not to cling to the world when God calls us to follow Him.

Show What You Know

  1. Why did God judge Sodom?

  2. How did the angels show God's mercy to Lot?

  3. Why did God rescue Lot, according to the chapter?

  4. What lesson did Jesus draw from Lot's wife?

Think About It

  1. Lot hesitated even when God was rescuing him. Why do people sometimes hold on to things that are not good for them?

  2. How does this chapter show that God is both just and merciful?

Memory Verse

Genesis 19 · Grade 5

Lot's Wife Looks Back

Name Date

Read and Think

Genesis 19 shows the outcome of Lot's choices that began in Genesis 13. Lot had moved toward Sodom, then into it, and now he sits in its gate, a place for leaders. When two angels arrive, Lot shows hospitality and urges them into his home. That night the men of the city surround the house, intending to harm the visitors. Their violence confirms the outcry that had reached the Lord. The angels protect Lot's household and strike the attackers with blindness.

The angels urge Lot to gather his family and flee, but even Lot's future sons-in-law treat his warning as a joke. At dawn Lot lingers. In a beautiful phrase, the angels seize him, his wife and daughters by the hand, Yahweh being merciful to him, and lead them out. Lot asks to flee to the small town of Zoar, and God graciously grants it. When the sun rises, the Lord rains sulfur and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah. Lot's wife looks back and becomes a pillar of salt.

Verse 29 gives the key: God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out. Abraham's intercession mattered. The chapter closes with a sad account in which Lot's family is drawn into further sin, showing how deeply Sodom had shaped them. Peter calls Lot a righteous man who was distressed by the wickedness around him (2 Peter 2:7-9), and concludes that the Lord knows how to rescue the godly. In the New Testament, Jesus warns his listeners to remember Lot's wife (Luke 17:32).

Show What You Know

  1. How do Lot's choices in Genesis 13 lead to Genesis 19?

  2. What phrase shows God's mercy in the rescue?

  3. According to verse 29, why was Lot rescued?

  4. What does 2 Peter 2 say God knows how to do?

  5. Why does Jesus tell people to remember Lot's wife?
