Genesis 19 · Grade 4
Mercy in the Midst of Judgment
Read and Think
Genesis 19 is a hard chapter, because it shows how wicked Sodom had become. When two angels came to the city, Lot welcomed them, but the men of the city gathered and tried to harm the guests. The angels protected Lot's household. The city's sin was so great that God's judgment could no longer wait.
Even then, God was patient and kind. The angels warned Lot to take his family and flee. Lot hesitated (19:16). So the angels took them by the hand and led them out, because the Lord was merciful. God rescued Lot because He remembered Abraham, whose prayers in Genesis 18 were not forgotten.
God sent fire on Sodom and Gomorrah. The angels had told them not to look behind them, but Lot's wife looked back and became a pillar of salt. In the New Testament, Jesus tells us to remember Lot's wife (Luke 17:32), warning us not to cling to the world when God calls us to follow Him.
