Exodus 1: God's People in Egypt

After Joseph died, the children of Israel were fruitful and multiplied greatly. A new king who didn't know Joseph feared them, so he made them slaves and gave them hard work, but the more they were oppressed, the more they grew. Pharaoh ordered the Hebrew midwives, Shiphrah and Puah, to kill the baby boys, but they feared God and saved the babies alive. God was kind to the midwives and gave them families.
