Shiphrah and Puah

Name Date

Read the Story

After Joseph died, God's people kept growing. Their families got bigger and bigger. Then a new king ruled Egypt. He did not know Joseph.

The new king was afraid of God's people. He made them slaves. They had to make bricks and work hard all day. But God's people kept growing!

The king told two women named Shiphrah and Puah to hurt the baby boys. Shiphrah and Puah helped mothers have babies. They loved God, so they said no to the king. They kept the babies safe. God was good to them and gave them families.

Memory Verse

“But the midwives feared God, and didn’t do what the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the baby boys alive.”

Exodus 1 · Grade 3

The Midwives Feared God

Name Date

Read the Story

Jacob's family came to Egypt with seventy people. Joseph and all his brothers died, but the children of Israel were fruitful and multiplied, and the land was filled with them.

A new king arose who didn't know Joseph. He said, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we. So the Egyptians set taskmasters over them and made them build store cities, Pithom and Raamses. They made their lives bitter with hard work in mortar and brick. But the more they were mistreated, the more they multiplied.

The king commanded the Hebrew midwives, Shiphrah and Puah, to kill the baby boys. But the midwives feared God and saved the boys alive. When the king questioned them, they said the Hebrew women gave birth before they arrived. God dealt well with the midwives, and He gave them families. Then Pharaoh commanded all his people to throw the baby boys into the river.

Memory Verse

“But the midwives feared God, and didn’t do what the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the baby boys alive.”

Exodus 1 · Grade 4

Fearing God More Than the King

Name Date

Read and Think

Exodus begins where Genesis ended. God had promised Abraham that his family would be as many as the stars. In Egypt, that promise came true: the Israelites grew into a huge people.

A new Pharaoh forgot Joseph and saw Israel as a danger. He tried to crush them with slavery, but God kept blessing them. No king can stop God's promises.

Shiphrah and Puah showed great courage. They respected God more than the most powerful king in the world. Their choice protected many lives. The Bible remembers their names, while the name of that Pharaoh is not given.

Show What You Know

  1. What promise to Abraham came true in Egypt?

  2. Why couldn't Pharaoh stop Israel from growing?

  3. Why were Shiphrah and Puah courageous?

  4. Whose names does the Bible remember in this chapter?

Think About It

  1. In the New Testament, Acts 5:29 teaches that we must obey God rather than people. When might a Christian need to obey God over others?

  2. Every life is precious to God. How can you show care for people who are small or weak?

Exodus 1 · Grade 5

Oppression and Courage

Name Date

Read and Think

Exodus opens by listing the sons of Israel who came to Egypt, then notes that Joseph died, as did all his brothers, and all that generation. Yet the Israelites were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and grew exceedingly mighty. These words echo God's blessing in creation (Genesis 1:28) and His promise to Abraham. God was keeping His word even in a foreign land.

A new king who didn't know Joseph responds with fear and cruelty. He enslaves Israel, forcing them to build store cities. God had told Abraham this would happen: his descendants would be afflicted in a land not their own (Genesis 15:13). But oppression could not stop God's blessing: the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied.

Pharaoh's second plan targets infant boys. Here two women, Shiphrah and Puah, become heroes of faith. Because they feared God, they refused an evil command. Their example shows that the fear of God frees us from the fear of man. Pharaoh's final order, to throw Hebrew boys into the Nile, sets the stage for the birth of Moses. The Nile that Pharaoh meant for death would become the place where God preserved Israel's deliverer.

Show What You Know

  1. What earlier words do Israel's growth echo?

  2. Where had God foretold this affliction?

  3. What happened when Egypt afflicted Israel more?

  4. What does the midwives' example teach about the fear of God?

  5. How does Pharaoh's order about the Nile set up chapter 2?
