Acts 5 · Grade 4
Truth and Courage
Read and Think
Ananias and Sapphira sold land and kept back part of the price while acting as if they gave it all. Peter said the land was theirs to keep. Their sin was lying to the Holy Spirit. Ananias fell down and died. Hours later Sapphira told the same lie and died too. Great fear came on the whole church.
Many signs were done by the apostles. Crowds brought the sick from towns near Jerusalem, and they were all healed. More believers were added to the Lord.
The high priest and the Sadducees were filled with jealousy. They put the apostles in the public prison. But an angel opened the doors by night and told them to speak "all the words of this life" in the temple.
Brought before the council, Peter said, "We must obey God rather than men." Gamaliel, a teacher of the law, said that if this work was of men, it would fail. But if it was of God, they could not stop it. The apostles were beaten and let go. They left rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer for the name. They never stopped teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ (Acts 5:42).
