Honor and Help

Name Date

Read the Story

Paul taught Timothy how to treat people in the church. He should speak kindly to an older man, as to a father. He should treat younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, in purity.

Paul said to honor widows, women whose husbands had died. If a widow has children or grandchildren, they should take care of her first. That is the right way to show love to family. A widow who is all alone hopes in God and prays night and day. The church should help her.

Paul also said leaders who teach well should be honored. Timothy should be fair and not take sides. He should keep himself pure. Paul said good works cannot stay hidden.

Show Piety at Home

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul tells Timothy how to treat others in the church family. He should not harshly scold an older man, but encourage him as a father. Younger men are like brothers, older women like mothers, and younger women like sisters, in all purity. Paul writes: Honor widows who are widows indeed.

Paul explains that if a widow has children or grandchildren, they should first learn to show love and respect at home, paying back their parents. This is pleasing in God's sight. A widow who is truly alone has her hope set on God and keeps praying night and day. Believers should help widows in their own families so the church can help those who are truly alone.

Paul says elders who lead well, especially those who teach the word, are worthy of double honor. He quotes Scripture: The laborer is worthy of his wages. Timothy should not accept an accusation against an elder without two or three witnesses. He must be fair and never show favoritism. Paul tells him: Keep yourself pure. He also says good works are clear to see, and even hidden ones will one day be seen.

Without Partiality

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul begins by telling Timothy how to relate to people of every age. He writes: Don't rebuke an older man, but exhort him as a father. Younger men are to be treated as brothers, older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, in all purity. The church is to act like a family.

Paul then writes: Honor widows who are widows indeed. He means widows with no one else to care for them. If a widow has children or grandchildren, they should first learn to show godliness toward their own family and repay their parents, because God is pleased by it. A widow who is truly alone has her hope set on God and continues in prayers night and day. Paul says that anyone who refuses to provide for his own family has denied the faith. Paul gives guidelines for which widows the church should support, describing those known for good works, kindness to strangers, and helping the afflicted.

Paul turns to elders. Elders who rule well, especially those who labor in the word and teaching, are worthy of double honor, for the laborer is worthy of his wages. Accusations against elders need two or three witnesses, and those who keep sinning should be corrected publicly. Paul solemnly charges Timothy to do all this without partiality. He should not be hasty in appointing leaders. Keep yourself pure, he says. He also tells Timothy to use a little wine for his frequent illnesses. Finally, some sins and some good works are obvious, but even hidden ones will come to light.
