Chapter 1Preschool–Grade 5

1 Timothy 1: Mercy for Sinners

1 Timothy 1 opens with the name Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, writing to Timothy, his true child in faith. Paul asks Timothy to stay at Ephesus and stop false teaching. The goal is love from a pure heart, a good conscience, and sincere faith. Paul thanks Christ Jesus for showing him mercy, though he once persecuted believers. Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, and Paul calls himself the chief. He praises the King eternal and urges Timothy to hold on to faith and a good conscience.

Chapter 2Preschool–Grade 5

1 Timothy 2: Pray for All People

1 Timothy 2 urges that prayers and thanks be made for all people, including kings and leaders, so believers may live quiet and godly lives. This pleases God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved. There is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all. Paul wants men everywhere to pray, lifting holy hands without anger. He also gives instructions about women in worship.

Chapter 3Preschool–Grade 5

1 Timothy 3: Leaders in God's House

1 Timothy 3 describes the kind of people who should lead and serve in the church. An overseer must live so that no one can rightly blame him. He must be self-controlled, kind to guests, able to teach, gentle, not a lover of money, and must manage his own household well. Servants in the church must also be worthy of respect, honest, and tested first. Paul writes so Timothy will know how people ought to behave in God's house, the assembly of the living God. He ends with a great truth about Christ: God was revealed in the flesh.

Chapter 4Preschool–Grade 5

1 Timothy 4: An Example for Believers

1 Timothy 4 warns that some will fall away from the faith by following false teachings. Paul reminds Timothy that everything God created is good when received with thanksgiving. He tells Timothy to train himself in godliness, which has value in all things. Paul says: Let no man despise your youth; but be an example to those who believe. Timothy is to devote himself to reading Scripture, encouraging, and teaching, and not neglect the gift God gave him.

Chapter 5Preschool–Grade 5

1 Timothy 5: Caring for God's Family

1 Timothy 5 teaches Timothy how to treat people in the church like family: older men as fathers, younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters. Paul says the church should honor and help widows who are truly alone, and families should care for their own relatives. Elders who lead well are worthy of honor, especially those who teach. Timothy must be fair, keep himself pure, and remember that good works cannot stay hidden.

Chapter 6Preschool–Grade 5

1 Timothy 6: Godliness With Contentment

1 Timothy 6 begins with instructions for bondservants to honor their masters, so that God's name is not spoken against. Paul warns about false teachers who think godliness is a way to get rich. He says, But godliness with contentment is great gain. We brought nothing into the world and can carry nothing out. The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Timothy is to flee these things, pursue righteousness, and fight the good fight of faith. The rich should be rich in good works.
