One Heart for the King

Name Date

Read and Think

Chapter 12 goes back in time to show who helped David before he was king. Mighty men came to him at Ziklag. Some were relatives of Saul from Benjamin, who could shoot arrows and sling stones with either hand. Others from Gad were as swift as gazelles.

When men from Benjamin and Judah came to the stronghold, David asked if they came in peace. Then the Spirit came on Amasai. He said they were David's, that peace was to him and his helpers, for his God helped him (12:18). David received them and made them captains.

Later, armed men from every tribe came to Hebron to turn Saul's kingdom to David. The sons of Issachar had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do. They all came with a perfect heart. For three days they ate and drank, and there was joy in Israel.

Understanding the Times

Name Date

Read and Think

This chapter steps back to David's years as a fugitive. Even while he was hiding from Saul, mighty men joined him at Ziklag. Some came from Saul's own tribe, Benjamin, and others crossed the Jordan from Gad, men whose faces were like the faces of lions. From day to day men came to help him, until there was a great army, like God's army (12:22).

When some from Benjamin and Judah came, David tested their loyalty. The Spirit came on Amasai, who declared that they belonged to David. He spoke peace to David and his helpers, because his God helped him. Here the Chronicler shows that the helpers came by God's prompting, not only by their own choice.

The second list counts the armed men who came to Hebron to make David king. The sons of Issachar had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do. Every group came with a perfect heart. Their brothers supplied food, and there was joy in Israel. God gathered his people around the king he had chosen.

Show What You Know

  1. Where did men join David while he hid from Saul?

  2. What were the men of Gad's faces like?
