Zephaniah 3 · Grade 4
The Mighty One Who Saves
Read and Think
Zephaniah's last chapter starts with woe to Jerusalem. She didn't obey the voice, didn't receive correction, didn't trust in Yahweh, and didn't draw near to her God. Her leaders were like roaring lions and evening wolves. Yet Yahweh, within her, is righteous. He will do no wrong, and every morning he brings his justice to light.
Then the message turns. God says, I will purify the lips of the peoples, that they may all call on Yahweh's name, to serve him shoulder to shoulder. Worshipers will come even from beyond the rivers of Cush. God will remove the proud and leave an afflicted and poor people who take refuge in his name. They will not speak lies.
The book ends with a song of joy. Sing, daughter of Zion! Shout, Israel! Yahweh has thrown out your enemy, and the King of Israel is among you. Yahweh, your God, is among you, a mighty one who will save. He will rejoice over you with joy. He will calm you in his love. He will rejoice over you with singing. God promises to gather the lame and the scattered and bring them home.
