Zephaniah 1:1 says Yahweh's word came to Zephaniah in the days of Josiah, king of Judah. God warns that the day of Yahweh is near. People in Judah had turned back from following Yahweh and worshiped other gods. Silver and gold would not save them on that day.
Zephaniah calls the people to gather together and seek Yahweh before the day of his anger comes. He tells the humble to seek righteousness and humility. God speaks about the nations around Judah that were proud and mocked his people. In the end, the people of the earth will worship Yahweh, and a remnant of Judah will find pasture.
Zephaniah describes Jerusalem as a city that did not obey or trust Yahweh. But Yahweh within her is righteous. God promises to purify the lips of the peoples so they can call on his name. A humble remnant will trust him. Zephaniah ends with joy: sing and shout! Yahweh is among you. He will rejoice over you with joy and singing.
