Zephaniah said, gather yourselves together. Come before the day of Yahweh's anger. Seek Yahweh, all you humble of the land. Seek righteousness. Seek humility.

God spoke about nations near Judah. Moab and Ammon had insulted God's people. They thought they were great. God said he had heard them. Their pride would not last.

God made a promise to his people. The sea coast would become pastures for shepherds. A remnant of Judah would find pasture there. One day people everywhere would worship Yahweh.

Seek Righteousness, Seek Humility

Name Date

Read and Think

Zephaniah urges Judah to gather together before the day of Yahweh's anger. Then he speaks to the faithful: seek Yahweh, all you humble of the land, who have kept his ordinances. Seek righteousness. Seek humility. It may be that you will be hidden in the day of Yahweh's anger.

God turns to the nations around Judah, west, east, south, and north. Philistia, Moab, Ammon, Cush, and Assyria each faced judgment. God says, I have heard the reproach of Moab and the insults of the children of Ammon. They had magnified themselves against his people, and pride brought them down.

There is hope in the chapter too. The remnant of Judah will find pasture on the coast, for Yahweh will visit them and restore their fortunes. Verse 11 says people will worship him, everyone from his place, even all the shores of the nations. Nineveh, the joyous city that said there is no one besides me, would become a quiet pasture.

No One Besides Me?

Name Date

Read and Think

Zephaniah 2 begins with urgency. Gather yourselves together, you nation that has no shame, before the day passes like chaff. Then the prophet speaks to a smaller group, the humble of the land who have kept God's ordinances. Seek Yahweh. Seek righteousness. Seek humility. It may be that you will be hidden in the day of Yahweh's anger. Zephaniah's call is not to panic but to seek God.

The prophet then surveys the nations around Judah in every direction: Philistia to the west, Moab and Ammon to the east, Cush to the south, and Assyria to the north. The common thread is pride. Moab and Ammon reproached God's people and magnified themselves; this they will have for their pride. God shows that he rules over all nations, not only Israel.

Hope weaves through the warnings. The coast once held by Philistia will become pasture for the remnant of Judah, for Yahweh their God will visit them. Verse 11 looks even further: men will worship him, everyone from his place, even all the shores of the nations. The chapter ends with Nineveh, the joyous city that lived carelessly and said in her heart, I am, and there is no one besides me. Proud self-sufficiency is the opposite of the humility Zephaniah urged at the start.

  1. Whom does Zephaniah address with the call to seek in verse 3?

  2. What sin ties together the nations in this chapter?

  3. How does verse 11 show God's plan reaches beyond Judah?

  4. How does Nineveh's boast contrast with verse 3?
