Zephaniah 2 · Grade 5

No One Besides Me?

Name Date

Read and Think

Zephaniah 2 begins with urgency. Gather yourselves together, you nation that has no shame, before the day passes like chaff. Then the prophet speaks to a smaller group, the humble of the land who have kept God's ordinances. Seek Yahweh. Seek righteousness. Seek humility. It may be that you will be hidden in the day of Yahweh's anger. Zephaniah's call is not to panic but to seek God.

The prophet then surveys the nations around Judah in every direction: Philistia to the west, Moab and Ammon to the east, Cush to the south, and Assyria to the north. The common thread is pride. Moab and Ammon reproached God's people and magnified themselves; this they will have for their pride. God shows that he rules over all nations, not only Israel.

Hope weaves through the warnings. The coast once held by Philistia will become pasture for the remnant of Judah, for Yahweh their God will visit them. Verse 11 looks even further: men will worship him, everyone from his place, even all the shores of the nations. The chapter ends with Nineveh, the joyous city that lived carelessly and said in her heart, I am, and there is no one besides me. Proud self-sufficiency is the opposite of the humility Zephaniah urged at the start.
