Kindness and Love Appeared

Name Date

Read the Story

Paul told Titus to remind believers to obey rulers and be ready to do good. They should not speak badly of anyone or start fights. They should be gentle and humble with all people.

Paul said that we were once foolish and did not obey God. We did wrong things and even hated each other. But then God our Savior showed His kindness and love. He saved us, not because of good things we did, but because of His mercy. He washed us and made us new through the Holy Spirit.

Because of God's grace, we are made right with Him. We have the hope of eternal life! So Paul said believers should be careful to do good works. They should stay away from foolish arguments. Paul ended by asking Titus to come see him.

Renewed by the Holy Spirit

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul tells Titus to remind believers to obey rulers and authorities and be ready for every good work. They should speak evil of no one, avoid quarrels, and be gentle, showing humility toward all people.

Paul remembers that we were once foolish and disobedient. Wrong desires led us astray. We were full of envy and hate. But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, He saved us. It was not because of good things we had done, but because of His mercy. He washed us, gave us new birth, and made us new by the Holy Spirit. God gave the Spirit to us generously through Jesus Christ. His grace made us right with God. Now we are heirs with the hope of eternal life.

Paul tells Titus to stress these things, so believers will be careful to do good works. They should avoid foolish arguments, which are useless. If someone keeps causing division after two warnings, Titus should have nothing more to do with him. Paul asks Titus to come to him at Nicopolis and to help Zenas and Apollos on their way.

Titus 3 · Grade 5

Heirs of Eternal Life

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul writes: Remind them to be in subjection to rulers and to authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work. Believers should speak evil of no one, not be quarrelsome, but be gentle, showing all humility toward all people.

Paul explains why. We were once foolish, disobedient, and deceived. We served wrong desires and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, hating one another. But when the kindness of God our Savior and his love toward mankind appeared, He saved us. Paul says it was not by our own good deeds, but by His mercy. God washed us and gave us new birth. The Holy Spirit renewed us, a gift God gave generously because of what Jesus our Savior did. Being justified by His grace, we became heirs with the hope of eternal life.

Paul calls this a faithful saying and wants Titus to insist on it, so that believers will be careful to maintain good works. He tells Titus to avoid foolish questions and quarrels, because they are useless. After a first and second warning, Titus should avoid a person who keeps causing division. Paul plans to send Artemas or Tychicus and asks Titus to come to Nicopolis. He wants believers to learn to do good works that meet real needs, so they will not be unfruitful.
