God Can't Lie

Name Date

Read the Story

Paul wrote to Titus, who was like a true son to him. Paul said God can't lie. Long ago, God promised eternal life. Now God has shown His word through the message Paul preached.

Paul had left Titus on the island of Crete. Titus was to finish the work there and choose leaders, called elders, in every city. An elder must be someone no one can rightly blame. He should not be proud, get angry fast, or be greedy. He should welcome guests, love what is good, and be fair, holy, and self-controlled.

An elder must hold on to God's true word, so he can teach and correct others. Some false teachers were upsetting whole families. They said they knew God. But their actions showed they did not follow Him.

Answer the Questions

  1. What can't God do?

  2. What did God promise long ago?

  3. What were the leaders in every city called?

  4. How did false teachers show they did not follow God?

Set in Order

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul writes to Titus, his true child in their shared faith. Paul serves in the hope of eternal life, which God, who can't lie, promised before time began. In His own time God revealed His word through the message Paul was trusted to preach.

Paul writes: I left you in Crete for this reason, that you would set in order the things that were lacking and appoint elders in every city. Each elder must be blameless, with believing children who are well behaved. Paul says an overseer is God's steward. He must not be self-pleasing, easily angered, a drinker, violent, or greedy. Instead he must welcome guests, love what is good, and be sensible, fair, holy, and self-controlled.

An elder must hold firmly to the faithful word, so he can encourage others with sound teaching and correct those who argue against it. Paul warns about many false teachers who were upsetting whole families for money. Titus should correct them so they become sound in faith. Paul says they claim to know God, but their actions show they do not follow Him.

Holding to the Faithful Word

Name Date

Read and Think

Paul writes to Titus, his true child according to a common faith. Paul describes himself as a servant of God, working in hope of eternal life, which God, who can't lie, promised before time began. In His own time God revealed His word in the message entrusted to Paul by the command of God our Savior.

Paul writes: I left you in Crete for this reason, that you would set in order the things that were lacking and appoint elders in every city. An elder must be blameless, the husband of one wife, with children who believe. For the overseer must be blameless, as God's steward: not self-pleasing, not easily angered, not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for dishonest gain. Instead he must be given to hospitality, a lover of good, sober minded, fair, holy, and self-controlled.

He must hold to the faithful word as it was taught, so that he can encourage with sound teaching and convict those who contradict it. Paul warns that there are many unruly talkers and deceivers, who upset whole households by teaching what they should not, for dishonest gain. Titus must correct them sharply, so they will be sound in the faith and not follow myths and human commands. Paul writes: To the pure, all things are pure. But those who do not believe are defiled in mind and conscience. They profess that they know God, but by their deeds they deny him.
