Song of Songs opens with its title: The Song of songs, which is Solomon's. In Hebrew, phrases like holy of holies or King of kings express the highest degree, so the title means the greatest song. The book is lyric poetry with several voices: a bride, her beloved, and a chorus of friends. It belongs with the Bible's wisdom books.

The Song celebrates the love between a husband and wife, which God designed from creation. In Genesis 2, God brings the woman to the man, and the two become one flesh in marriage. Scripture treats faithful married love as a good and holy gift. The Song pictures this love with images of flocks, gardens, vineyards, and springtime.

In 1:7-8 the bride asks her shepherd where he grazes his flock and rests them at noon, and she is told to follow the tracks of the sheep. In the New Testament, marriage is a picture of Christ's love for His church. Many Christians read the Song this way too. This is an interpretation, not something the Song says directly. In the New Testament, Paul writes, Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the assembly and gave himself up for her (Ephesians 5:25).
