Song of Solomon 1 · Grade 4
God's Good Gift
Read and Think
The book's first verse is its title: The Song of songs, which is Solomon's. Just as holy of holies means the holiest place, Song of songs means the greatest song. The book is a poem with different speakers, including a bride, a groom, and their friends.
The Song celebrates love and marriage, which God designed. In Genesis, God made the man and the woman and brought them together. Faithful love between a husband and wife is part of God's good creation. The poem uses pictures from nature, such as flocks, vineyards, and gardens.
In 1:7-8, the bride asks the shepherd where he grazes his flock and rests them at noon. She is told, follow the tracks of the sheep. Graze your young goats beside the shepherds' tents. In the New Testament, marriage is a picture of Christ's love for His church. Many Christians read the Song this way too. This is an interpretation, not something the Song says directly.
