Naomi told Ruth she wanted her to have a good home. Boaz was part of their family. That night he would be working with the barley.

Ruth said she would do all that Naomi said. She went to where Boaz was. She lay down at his feet. When Boaz woke, Ruth asked him to take care of her, because he was from her family. Boaz asked God to bless her. He told her not to be afraid. Everyone knew she was a worthy woman.

Boaz said there was another man who was a closer relative. If that man would not help, Boaz would. Boaz gave Ruth six measures of barley to take home. Naomi said, Wait. Boaz will not rest until this is settled.

Boaz Makes a Promise

Name Date

Read the Story

Naomi said, My daughter, shall I not seek rest for you? Boaz is our kinsman. Tonight he will be winnowing barley on the threshing floor. Ruth said, All that you say, I will do.

Ruth went down and did what Naomi told her. She lay at Boaz's feet. At midnight Boaz asked, Who are you? She said, I am Ruth your servant. Spread the corner of your garment over your servant, for you are a near kinsman. This was a way of asking him to marry and protect her.

Boaz said, You are blessed by Yahweh, my daughter. Don't be afraid. All the city knows that you are a worthy woman. But there is a kinsman nearer than I. If he will not help, I will. He gave her six measures of barley. Naomi said, The man will not rest until he has settled this today.

A Respectful Request

Name Date

Read and Think

Naomi wanted to seek rest, a safe home, for Ruth. She reminded Ruth that Boaz was their kinsman and told her to go to the threshing floor where he was winnowing barley. Ruth answered, All that you say, I will do.

After Boaz finished eating and lay down at the end of the heap of grain, Ruth quietly lay at his feet. At midnight he was startled. Ruth asked him to spread the corner of his garment over her because he was a near kinsman. This was a respectful request for marriage and protection.

Boaz blessed her for this kindness and praised her for not following young men. He called her a worthy woman, as all the city knew. He promised to act, but first a nearer kinsman had the right. He sent her home before dawn with six measures of barley, saying, Don't go empty to your mother-in-law. Naomi told Ruth to wait, because Boaz would settle it that day.

Ruth 3 · Grade 5

A Worthy Woman

Name Date

Read and Think

Naomi, who once called herself empty, now looked for rest for Ruth, a secure home where it would be well with her. Boaz was their kinsman, and that night he would winnow barley at the threshing floor. Naomi gave Ruth careful instructions, and Ruth replied, All that you say, I will do.

Ruth went down and followed the plan. After Boaz lay down at the end of the heap of grain, she came softly and lay at his feet. At midnight he was startled and asked who she was. Ruth answered, I am Ruth your servant. Therefore spread the corner of your garment over your servant; for you are a near kinsman. In chapter 2, Boaz had blessed Ruth for taking refuge under Yahweh's wings; now Ruth asked Boaz to spread his garment over her, a request for marriage and protection.

Boaz responded with honor. He said she was blessed by Yahweh and had shown more kindness now than at the beginning, because she had not sought young men. He told her not to be afraid and said all the city knew she was a worthy woman. Yet Boaz was careful to do right: a kinsman nearer than he must have the first chance. He vowed, as Yahweh lives, to act if the other would not. Before dawn he gave her six measures of barley so she would not return empty to Naomi. Naomi told Ruth to wait, confident the man would not rest until the matter was settled.
