During a famine in the days of the judges, Elimelech and Naomi move from Bethlehem to Moab with their two sons, who marry Orpah and Ruth. Elimelech and both sons die. Naomi decides to return home and urges her daughters-in-law to go back to their mothers. Orpah goes back, but Ruth says, Where you go, I will go; your people will be my people, and your God my God. Ruth 2: Ruth Gleans in Boaz's Field

Ruth goes to glean grain and happens to come to the field of Boaz, a relative of Elimelech. Boaz greets his reapers with May Yahweh be with you. He notices Ruth, tells her to stay in his field, and blesses her because she has come to take refuge under Yahweh's wings. He gives her food and tells his men to leave extra grain. Naomi rejoices that Yahweh has not abandoned His kindness, because Boaz is one of their near kinsmen.

Ruth 3: Ruth at the Threshing Floor

Naomi wants to find rest for Ruth and sends her to the threshing floor where Boaz is winnowing barley. Ruth lies down at his feet and asks him to spread the corner of his garment over her, because he is a near kinsman. Boaz blesses her, calls her a worthy woman, and promises to act, though there is a nearer kinsman. He sends her home with six measures of barley, and Naomi says he will not rest until the matter is settled.

Ruth 4: Boaz Redeems Ruth

Boaz sits at the city gate with ten elders and offers the nearer kinsman the right to redeem Elimelech's land. When the kinsman learns he must also marry Ruth, he declines and takes off his sandal. Boaz buys the land and takes Ruth as his wife before witnesses. Yahweh gives them a son, Obed. The women praise Yahweh, who has not left Naomi without a kinsman. Obed is the father of Jesse, the father of David.
